Job Description
The Director of Development & Communications plays a vital role in raising the financial resources and support to sustain and grow LEJ’s work. This position reports to the Executive Director. The Director of Development & Communications ensures that LEJ meets and/or exceeds our fundraising goals by setting financial goals, managing foundation and government grants, stewarding individual donor relationships, and managing mass digital communications.
This full-time position is a hybrid employment model of virtual (remote) and in-person at 1150 Carroll Avenue, San Francisco. The Director of Development & Communications works closely with the Programs and Operations staff. Local (San Francisco Bay Area) candidates only. This full-time position will work partially remote and partially in-person in our SF headquarters located in Bayview Hunters Point.
The Director of Development & Communications provides excellent stewardship by overseeing the donor database and acknowledgments. This individual plays a key role in the success of our fundraising, events, and communication efforts.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Executive Team in organizational strategic planning.
Design and implement fundraising strategies across the organization.
Proactively give feedback and input for other staff.
Maintain accuracy and integrity of Salesforce and Network for Good donor databases and generate all necessary reports, data visualization, information, and ongoing data entry of new and potential supporters.
Manage the grants calendar that includes communications with funders and the renewal of funding requests on an annual basis.
Ensure regular and effective online communications including via Instagram, Facebook, and LEJ’s website and newsletter.
Draft and finalize copy for press releases, newsletters, blog posts, and social media posts.
Coordinate with Program staff to ensure correct and up-to-date information is published via online communications.
Timely ongoing creation of reports, forms and data for supervisors as needed by other departments.
Support Grants Contractor in preparation of and submission of grants applications/reports.
Conduct grant prospecting/research.
Prepare timely acknowledgment letters and other correspondence with donors and funders.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience in a senior leadership role with a non-profit or public service organization.
A proven track record of successful fundraising in comparable spaces.
Excellent public speaking and writing skills.
High multicultural sensibilities related to a background with diverse environmental and social movements.
Preferably, the candidate has meaningful experience in media production and distribution.
General operational experience.
Commitment to LEJ’s mission and work. Mission-driven, growth mindset, and commitment to continuous improvement and reflective practice.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
At least 2 years of experience doing administrative, general operations, and fundraising in a nonprofit development department.
Excellent writing and communication skills.
Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and PDF creation or modification.
Meticulous attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and ability to set up and follow systems allowing organized and efficient work flow.
Ability to project manage multiple tasks under deadline pressure.
Commitment to doing excellent work, particularly in producing materials for donor outreach.
Ability to work independently and in a collaborative setting.
Willingness to learn from mistakes, receive feedback, and give feedback to others.
Willingness to propose and implement new ideas.
