Role
Under general direction, performs duties responsible for all aspects of processing biweekly payroll, including maintaining records, filing tax reports, and year-end W-2 preparation.
Major Duties, Responsibilities
  • Processes biweekly payroll, including auditing and entering timesheet data, verifying employee action forms, printing and distributing checks, and balancing the employee deferred compensation account.
  • Assists other departments and employees with payroll related issues and resolves problems.
  • Processes, updates, and distributes involuntary deductions such as child support, levies, and garnishments.
  • Prepares and files quarterly and annual tax reports with the Arizona Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Prepares year-end employee W-2 forms.
  • Prepares cash deposits, processes and distributes employee travel checks, and tracks Highway User Revenue Fund receipts and employee retirement service purchases.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
A minimum of four (4) years of accounting experience.
Additional Requirements:
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • County payroll policies and procedures.
  • Relevant payroll programs.
  • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
  • Clerical office practices and procedures.
  • Research techniques and report writing.
  • Current Microsoft Office software.
  • Filing and recordkeeping.

Skill in:
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Organization and adherence to detail.

Ability to:
  • Process biweekly payroll by established deadlines and with zero errors.
  • Complete all reports in a timely manner and with zero errors.
  • Keep supervisor informed of key operating issues affecting payroll.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
  • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
  • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
  • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
  • Work professionally and effectively with co-workers, clients, victims of crime, witnesses, and the general public.
  • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

Work Environment:
The work environment is associated with an office. The work area is adequately lighted, heated or cooled and ventilated.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
