The primary purpose of the position is to oversee, reconcile, and otherwise account for professional and technical charges generated by Department clinical faculty and providers. Functions are performed in compliance with department, division, and institutional policies and procedures. Develops, implements, and monitors business processes to ensure all department revenue is appropriately charged and captured. Conducts charge reconciliations for both inpatient and outpatient in both clinical and research arenas. Coordinates and/or provides compliance education; research compliance issues and provide recommendations to improve documentation accuracy based on expert opinions rendered by Billing Compliance. Conducts analyses, formulates recommendations, and prepares written reports and oral presentations to ensure the department's revenue cycle function at optimal efficiency. Tracks and reports provider productivity.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Revenue capture activities
§ Develop, implement, and monitor processes to ensure that all professional charges are captured appropriately via the electronic charge capture system.
§ Utilize OneConnect to ensure documentation exists for submitted charges.
§ Collaborate with leadership, and providers to identify problem areas related to capturing departmental revenue.
§ Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the charge capture process and the processes involved in entering charges and the routine CPT coding related to departmental patient care activities.
§ Utilize familiarity with the most frequently used CPT codes and the documentation elements required for each level.
§ Research documentation issues to provide recommendations for accurate document compliance guidelines as appropriate.
Reconciliation of charges (inpatient and outpatient)
§ Ensure that a charge is entered for each "arrived" or admitted patient in OneConnect.
§ For "arrived" or admitted patients for whom a charge has not been entered, contact the provider to request a completed charge be submitted and document this initial request for charge completion in the electronic charge capture (ECC) system.
§ Perform reconciliation at least weekly.
§ Each week, follow up on charges not previously completed.
Reporting activities
§ Prepare departmental responses for institutional reports detailing status for revenue and activity.
§ Maintain up-to-date data for internal department spreadsheets tracking provider productivity.
§ Identify trends and shifts in billing practices and report to Department Administrator.
Education & Training
§ Train incoming staff (mid-level providers, fellows, and faculty) on charge entry process documentation requirements.
§ Instruct personnel on processes, procedures and new system applications.
§ Provide recommendations to providers to improve documentation accuracy and timelines to meet institutional compliance guidelines.
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Required: Associate's degree in Business Administration or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Required: Three years professional fee or technical billing experience in healthcare, insurance or related field. May substitute required education degree with additional years of professional billing experience on a one to one basis.
