Job description

Online Programs at Utah State University Extension is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to produce online educational content for non-credit programs. Projects involve working with subject-matter experts and other design professionals to create online courses. Subjects are wide-ranging and may include parenting and relationships education, personal finance, pesticide safety, and gardening, etc. The position is a portfolio-building opportunity that provides experience in audio/video editing, animation, and interactive video production. It also involves organizing, updating, and structuring course content into a learning management system (LMS) and fulfilling additional tasks that fall within the scope of online education.

 

The primary focus of this position will be supporting USU’s Utah Marriage Commission and USU Healthy Relationships Utah initiatives. The Instructional Designer will design, develop, and produce online relationship education content. The Utah Marriage Commission provides educational services to help individuals and couples form and sustain healthy relationships and enduring marriages (see StrongerMarriage.org). Healthy Relationships Utah is an Extension initiative that offers relationship skills programs in schools, jails, and communities throughout Utah. (see HealthyRelationshipsUtah.org).

 

The administrative offices for USU Extension and the Utah Marriage Commission are in Logan Utah, where work space is available. This position is telework eligible within the state of Utah, consistent with USU policy 330. Regardless of primary work location, we expect regular in-office time on the Logan USU campus.

 

The position is full-time and will be hired as either an Instructional Designer I or II depending on qualifications and duties assigned.  Please see the Qualifications Section below.

Multimedia Development (40%)

  • Produce educational multimedia, including capturing and editing video, creating animations and graphics, editing audio, creating narrated presentations, etc.
  • Speed, creativity, and a desire to push boundaries while juggling multiple projects is expected.

Course Building and Instructional Design (40%)

  • Organize and build courses in learning management systems, utilizing knowledge of educational and instructional design theories and emerging technologies.

Other duties (20%)

  • Other tasks as requested by unit supervisor or project manager including, but not limited to, overall brand design and promotion.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The position will be hired as either an Instructional Designer I or II:
    • For Instructional Designer I:  A bachelor’s degree in a related field; OR four years experience producing and editing multimedia materials, preferably for education or training; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • For Instructional Designer II:  A bachelor's degree in a related field plus two years of experience; OR six years experience producing and editing multimedia materials, preferably for education or training; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • For either Level:
    • Evidence of project work using multimedia tools and instructional or web development tools, such as Final Cut, Premiere Pro, Audition, Camtasia, Captivate, Articulate, Adobe Creative Suite, PowerPoint.
    • Evidence of work using learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Digital Chalk, Moodle), or content management systems (e.g., WordPress).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in a related field.
  • Strong multimedia editing and production skills.
  • Experience teaching or designing online courses using different LMS environments.
  • Experience setting up digital credentials.
  • Experience using a variety of video equipment including SLR cameras, mobile devices, microphones, lighting, etc.
  • Experience with SCORM, HTML, CSS, etc.
  • Residence in Utah and ability to spend regular in-office time on the Logan USU campus.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Evidence of good instructional design skills.
  • Evidence of strong organization and customer service skills.
  • Evidence of good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively with strong visual design skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and troubleshoot systems quickly with limited training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work comfortably in a team environment and on collaborative projects.
