The Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves 19 counties in Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri. Our programs reach more than 25,000 youth and adults. Our mission to is deliver Scouting across the Greater Kansas City area. The leadership of
the Heart of America Council is committed to providing a safe and secure Scouting environment for all.
Our council continues to be at the forefront in providing a unique program which develops the character, ethical behavior, and leadership skills of our region’s youth. The strength of Scouting in the Heart of America Council is derived from our fiscal health, youth safety, programmatic adventures, dedicated volunteers, the quality, and leadership of our board of directors and professional staff. Our annual operating budget is $8.5mm with 20% generated by our development team.
Director of Development Job Responsibilities:
• Implement and execute a plan to meet established goals for annual giving, capital projects, and endowment programs.
• Manage and build relationships with donors.
• Provide leadership to development team.
• Provide support to the following committees/Board VPs: VP of Finance, VP of Endowment, and Capital Campaign Steering Committee, along with special events.
• Prepare and present regular reports on progress towards fundraising goals.
• Plan and execute special events.
• Manage grant writing and identification of new grant opportunities.
• Assist in creation of print, digital and social media content.
• Serve as a member of the Executive Director’s leadership team.
Work Hours & Benefits

Director of Development Qualifications/Skills:
• Applied understanding of basic fundraising principles and development best practices.
• Strong prospect identification and qualification skills.
• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading ability.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
• Database and spreadsheet proficiency.
• Working knowledge of CRM software and Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook).
• Experience with online fundraising, email marketing, and internet research.
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum five years of fundraising or business experience.
• Previous management experience a plus.
• Proven track record of meeting fundraising goals and securing major gifts.
• Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) not required, but a plus.
