What We Do
At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering questions related to the practical design and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.
As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning (ML) to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we:
  • build real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities through solving practical engineering problems.
  • discover and define the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for robust, secure, scalable, and human-centered mission capabilities.
  • prepare our customers to be ready for the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities.
  • identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscape.

Position Summary
As a Strategic Communications Intern in the SEI AI Division, you will work to develop materials and messaging that promote and publicize our work to advance the discipline of AI engineering and build AI mission solutions. As a member of our Engagement Team, you will collaborate with business developers and project managers as well as researchers, engineers, and developers.

Duties
Collaborate with researchers to write blog posts and other published materials about their work, and with communications staff in other parts of the SEI to disseminate those materials.
Contribute to the Engagement Team’s strategy for building a community around the discipline of AI Engineering by advising on communications, content, and events.
Develop communication materials, including fact sheets, presentations, and overviews of research projects.

Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in a communications-focused bachelor’s or master’s degree program, with availability to work during summer 2024 Able to work onsite at our offices in Pittsburgh
  • Candidates will be subject to a background check
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of communication methods and vehicles for showcasing technical research
  • Skilled at collaborating with technical experts to elicit and emphasize important points about research and its real-world impacts
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to readers and audiences with varying levels of expertise
