THE ORGANIZATION
A private nonprofit organization founded in 1973, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) is a large agency that is part of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) nationwide network. Founded as a result of the federal Older Americans Act, the AAAs are mandated to "facilitate the area-wide development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated system for providing long-term care in home and community-based settings, in a manner responsive to the needs and preferences of older individuals and their family caregivers." PCA carries out this mission through advocacy, stewardship of public funding, planning, development and administration of programs, and service coordination.
The mission of PCA is to improve the quality of life for older Philadelphians and those with disabilities and assist them in achieving the greatest possible levels of health, independence, and productivity.
Requirements
DEFINITION:
Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) is the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) supporting older and disabled individuals in Philadelphia County. PCA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. The Marketing, Communications & Development Intern opportunity is for a student interested in enhancing his/her/their knowledge and skills in marketing; effective internal and external marketing and educational communications; developing fundraising/donor sources; and grant-writing. An ideal intern will want to gain further experience in the foregoing topics and be eligible to earn academic credits for participating in an internship or field experience opportunity. The student and his/her/their faculty advisor will participate in developing the syllabus for the internship or field experience.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Current Junior or Senior year undergraduate student preferably in a related field ( e.g. English, Marketing/Communications, Journalism, Development/Fundraising).
- Experience/interest in project management, writing, and database management.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Facility with technology and software because the experience will be remote.
Internship Opportunity Highlights:
- Conduct research to learn about the roles and responsibilities of a AAA and develop an understanding about PCA's work on behalf of older adults and people with disabilities, and PCA's partnerships with the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and other Pennsylvania AAAs.
- "Shadow" PCA staff in the marketing, communications and development units. Optimally, the intern will enhance both his/her/their knowledge and skills regarding generating brand awareness, developing internal and external communications including digital marketing, and fundraising for PCA's two eleemosynary funds, the "Emergency Fund" and the "Rodney D. Williams Philadelphia Fund for Seniors."
- Learn about planning for and execution of fund-raising and community-facing events.
- Participate in the donor development process.
- Research corporate sponsorship opportunities for events, exhibits, and activities of PCA.
