Senior Associate ScientistCompound Management

BMS encompasses a broad range of disciplines to enable a robust pipeline of drug candidates aimed at serious diseases. Chemistry is a core capability in Small Molecule & Drug Discovery with innovative scientists working in medicinal chemistry, radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, and large-scale synthesis. Within SMDD our Lead Discovery and Optimization (LDO) team is responsible for high throughput screening, compound storage and distribution, primary assays to support discovery programs, and compound profiling to explore drug liabilities in vitro. LDO scientists discover and adopt cutting edge assay technologies that utilize state-of-the-art automation to drive speed and efficiency. Our Molecular Structure and Design team embraces novel approaches to computer-aided drug design, machine learning, and structural biology. The integration of these disciplines provides a seamless and highly interactive environment for discovery scientists to learn, develop, and innovate. Working in partnership with our disease area experts in the Thematic Research Centers provides an exciting pathway to discover and deliver medicines to patients in need.

Leads Discovery and Optimization (LDO) is a dynamic organization that supports the entire continuum of drug discovery from lead identification to clinical candidate delivery at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS). LDO leverages state of the art technologies, complemented by deep subject matter expertise and broad scientific knowledge, to deliver innovative and comprehensive preclinical in vitro datasets to support our drug discovery pipeline in disease areas such as oncology, immunology, fibrosis, cardiovascular diseases, and cell therapy.

We are seeking for a highly motivated Senior Associate Scientist to join our Compound Management (CM) group in San Diego, CA. The CM group stores and secures BMS small molecule compound collections and maintains sample integrity while efficiently distributing compounds on demand locally and across BMS and external research sites for testing in high-throughput screening and profiling assays. Sample handling and plating automation are integrated with compound ordering and inventory management software.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive and process small molecule compound requests to support projects across BMS sites as well as external collaboration including packing, labeling, and maintain proper documentation
  • Logistical support for project teams including documentation management, shipping and receiving of disposables and compounds, and communication with global partners
  • Follow established protocols to maintain accuracy of research compound inventory
  • Weighing, dissolution, compound storage/retrieval
  • Operation of laboratory automation and liquid handlers to fulfill requests
  • Prepare acoustic dispensed assay ready compound plates
  • Support high-throughput screening and lead profiling efforts
  • Troubleshooting and recovery of instrumentation errors
  • Perform routine QC of liquid handling and schedule regular preventive maintenance
  • Maintain inventory of consumables
  • Coordinate with other team members including team across sites and cross-train
  • Adhere to EHS standards for laboratory safety, including proper use of personal protective equipment and proper operation of safety enclosures and other equipment

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree with 4+ years of academic / industry experience

or

Master’s degree with 2+ years of academic / industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in Chemistry, Biology or equivalent field with 4+ years of working within Compound Management or related fields
  • Demonstrated record of competency working in high throughput screening or Compound Management or other chemistry or biology laboratory
  • Experience working with liquid handling instruments (ideally Tecan or Hamilton) and acoustic dispensers
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines that may be altered by rapidly changing priorities
  • Collaborative and flexible
  • Titian Mosaic software knowledge is a plus
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Knime, and Pipeline Pilot is preferred

For California Sites - The starting compensation for this job is a range from $79,000 – $110,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
