POSITION SUMMARY:
The role of Project Specialist spends the majority of their time on the shop floor. The purpose of the position is to expedite any and all issues that could delay fabrication or completion of documentation.
The Project Specialist supports Project Management and Project Engineering in monitoring and controlling performance and collaborating in making course corrections where necessary to meet project schedule, cost, quality, safety and corporate goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key requirements and duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain strong communication skills, highly motivated, and collaborative work style to meet team goals
- Work closely with fabrication and project personnel.Constant interaction with shop production is expected.
- Maintain clear status communications with Production, QA/QC, Projects, and Customer's Inspector on the current state of each work station and when next key activities are expected
- Attend all shop safety meetings/shift kick-off briefing
- Understand fully all of the project shop procedures and work instructions
- Have a high understanding of production control requirements and the project manufacturing, inspection, and test plan
- Expect to be on the shop floor approximately 85% of shift while work is in progress
- Exhibit clear understanding of all WIP and know what are the next activities and hold points for each work station
- Monitoring and facilitating notice for upcoming steps, such as customer hold point notifications
- Looking ahead to identify the need for expediting of parts, paper, other needs that production may have, and expediting any/all parties to ensure that these items are made available to production ahead of their needs
- Support Projects, QA, and logistics with scheduling issues; what is needed, where, and when
- Initiate, manage, and maintain group and individual training on all shop procedures and work instructions
- Identify shop employees who are falling behind in training or understanding and reinforce with individual hands-on training
- Review shop travelers and work documents for accuracy, both pre-publish and during WIP
- Assist fabricators and supervisors with all shop documentation
- Ensuring that the shop work package documentation is complete, and current with fabrication progress, accurate, and legible at all times
- Pull copies/actual documents for completed packages/fabrication and deliver to QAE
- Test set-ups, when requested and trained
- Completion of weekly scorecards to capture project progress
- Completion of other reporting metrics requested by the Project Manager or Project Engineer
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Unless in the Lead capacity, Project Specialists do not have direct supervisory responsibilities, though they may be asked to provide performance input related to their peers.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATION:
- Entry level Engineer with focus in industrial or mechanical disciplinesorperson of advanced technical aptitude
- Experience in steel fabrication environment, preferably job-shop, or general contract companies preferred
- Experience working within a controlled manufacturing process (quality control program) preferred
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong fabrication background/builder-mentality
- Strong technical skills/aptitude
- Strong work ethic
- Strong communication skills, highly motivated, and collaborative work style to meet team goals
- Constant interaction with shop production is expected
- Basic understanding of welding codes, blueprint reading, and machining practices
- Proficient with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced office setting. The person may be required to be in production areas at times. He/she must be able to walk to and from job sites. There may be local travel up to 10% of the time and out-of-town travel (including air travel) up to 5% of the time with notice.
