Location:
This is a fulltime, permanent position based out of Newport, OR.
What you will do:
The primary responsibility of this permanent position will serve as the Assistant Project Leader for management of Oregon’s commercial and recreational shellfish fisheries, engaging in a variety of tasks ranging from field research to data analysis and communication with stakeholders. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the sustainable management of shellfish resources and make a meaningful impact on marine conservation efforts. Some of the duties will include:
  • Monitor multiple commercial and recreational shellfish fisheries, including but not limited to crab, shrimp, clams, mussels, sea urchins, abalone, and other groups.
  • Provide technical support for study design, database development, statistical analyses, and preparation of technical reports related to shellfish management.
  • Participate in field research to collect data on shellfish species and harvest activities.
  • Communicate with commercial and recreational shellfish harvesters to explain rules and regulations, natural history, and harvest techniques.
  • Coordinate procedures and assist the Project Leader in planning, monitoring, and evaluating recreational and commercial shellfish harvest activities.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Shellfish Fishery Management Plans.
  • Assist with planning, design, and conducting shellfish research to address knowledge gaps in shellfish populations and impacts.

Working Conditions:
  • Combination of indoor and outdoor work, including frequent visits to shellfish harvest locations.
  • Sampling conducted in various environments, including docks, estuaries, beaches, and at sea.
  • Requires working at low tides, on weekends (Saturday and Sunday), as well as periodic work in the early mornings and late evenings.
  • Position may be physically demanding. Occasional work at sea on small boats or commercial fishing vessels in adverse weather and rough seas.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and irregular hours.
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, but does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • Position requires taking a Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response training certification (HAZWOPER) to respond to hazardous material spill events.
  • Person in this position must have or obtain Oregon Boater Education card through the Oregon State Marine Board.
  • Duties of the position may include the use of a SPOTS Card for work-related purchases.
  • Must be able to work and communicate effectively with ODFW, other government agencies, commercial shellfish harvesters, recreational shellfish harvesters, academic investigators, students, and members of the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience in biological sciences/Natural Resources performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; or three additional years of experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a Biology, Fish or Wildlife program; OR
  • One year of experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a Biology, Fisheries, or Wildlife program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Master's degree in Biology, Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences; OR
  • A Doctorate degree in Biology, Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.
  • The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately, and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.
Requested Skills:
We are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:
  • Planning, organizing, and conducting ecological field studies in intertidal and/or estuarine environments;
  • Familiarity and understanding of the biology and ecology of intertidal shellfish, especially bay clams;
  • Conducting field operations using small boats;
  • Planning, designing, and implementing research activities to help improve management of shellfish fisheries;
  • Performing and creating database operations and conducting statistical analyses;
  • Preparing summary documents and technical reports;
  • Providing communication and outreach to members of the public, stakeholders, and the media;
  • Developing and/or updating educational materials.
Criminal Records/DMV Check:
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.
