Location: Topeka, KS
Work Arrangements: 100% on-site (M-F 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
In this role you will:
- Support technical efforts to evaluate and improve on processes and formulations in Pet food manufacturing plants to improve production rates, efficiencies, and yield while maintaining reliable and safe manufacturing systems.
- Provide technical guidance between operations and Research and Development (R&D) on new product/process development, act as liaison between R&D and Operations for scheduling and conducting plant test runs.
- Manage the evaluation of new crops of ingredients, including grains and meats. Coordinate analytical and product testing to determine acceptability.
- Work within specification systems, with a focus on recipe creation, ingredient substitutions, cost optimization, and plant trial requests.
- Coordinate and lead plant trials to evaluate new ingredients and/or new processing/packaging parameters.
- Identify, develop, and execute projects, can include developing the funding request, managing the capital and engineering through start up.
- Design and execute experiments at both supplier sites and in plant operations.
- Validate improvements/corrective actions that will deliver the desired benefits.
- Develop a detailed understanding of all unit operations, with focus on process operations, within the primary manufacturing location.
- Support plant continuous improvement efforts, e.g. key element ownership, conducting audits, coaching technicians, training assignments, etc.
- Support organizational efforts to build fundamental understanding within the operating technicians in pursuit of a high-performance culture.

What we are looking for:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineer or Feed/Food Science or related degree
- 2+ years experience in engineering, manufacturing and/or R&D
- Strong background in applying engineering principles & critical thinking to solve complex technical problems
- Willingness to have a workload balance that includes systems tasks as well as laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing plant tasks
- Ability to apply statistical thinking and decision making
- Willingness to travel 30% of the work schedule (could include travel to vendors, other Smucker locations, and international travel)
- Ability to respond remotely to off hours plant formulation issues
Additional skills and experiences that we think would make someone successful in this role:'
- Familiarity with food ingredient chemistry and/or food processing and packaging equipment
- Experience with baking systems, food extrusion, canning, or pet food manufacturing
