- Prepares and administers the District’s $20 million payroll, ensuring accurate payroll deductions and elections (flex benefits, TSA’s, IPERS, state and federal taxes, United Way, etc.) quarterly and annual reporting for taxes and IPERS, and W-2 and 1095 preparation. Ensures all staff are entered into the Centralized Employee Registry. Processes timesheets for employees.
- Inputs master calendar into the absence management and time and attendance systems. Reconciles and enters employee leaves according to distinct policy.
- Administers the District’s sick leave bank.
- Writes the grant and files the claim for the IDEA Part B federal funds.
- Calculates and enters the federal Title IIA class size reduction funds for payroll.
- Prepares the Juvenile Court quarterly report.
- Processes teacher quality submissions for payroll.
- Processes vendor and contractor contracts that are board approved.
- Administers the District’s early retirement plan, assisting prospective and existing early retirees in understanding cash payments and medical benefits.
- Consults with employees regarding IPERS questions/issues to facilitate early retirement planning.
- Oversees daily accounting functions and assists staff in resolving issues.
- Administers the District’s daily cash position, including short-term investments. Ensures that any excess cash is invested to optimize interest income. Facilitates the District’s relationship with local banks.
- Represents the District during worker’s compensation audits. Completes worker’s compensation wage reports.
- Notarize documents for the District.
- High School graduate or equivalent. Two-year degree in business or accounting preferred plus three to five years’ work experience.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use various software programs, primarily Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality required relative to district records.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Self-motivated with good problem-solving skills and to the ability lead/direct staff.
- Observation of all District policies and procedures.
- Ability to create a sense of belonging and a welcoming environment for all students and staff.

Ames CSD is seeking a Payroll Specialist. Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Payroll Specialist administers the District’s payroll, including quarterly and annual tax reporting, and the District’s early retirement plan. This position monitors the District’s cash/short-term investment position and allocates excess funds to optimize interest income. The Payroll Specialist represents the District in worker’s compensation audits.
Schedule: Full-time, 255 day-calendar, 7:00am-3:30pm
