Job Description
The City of Friendswood is currently accepting applications for a full-time HR Benefit Specialist, in the Human Resource Department. This position will assist in the administration of various employee benefit plans such as life, health, dental, and disability insurances, pension plans, vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, and unemployment; answers employees' questions and records employee enrollment in benefit programs. Processes and balances monthly benefit invoices for payment, making adjustments and corrections as needed. This job is onsite.
WORK PERFORMED:
- Orients and enrolls new employees in benefit plans and provides benefits orientation.
- Verifies and completes benefit enrollment forms.
- Prepares and communicates information on benefits; explains benefit programs such as retirement, health, dental, vision, life, and disability plans to employees, employee dependents and former employees.
- Assist in new employee orientation to cover policies, procedures, safety and other subjects deemed necessary.
- Calculates amount of employees' paycheck deductions for benefits, submits to payroll and resolves discrepancies.
- Coordinate all Leave of Absence including FMLA, ADA, Workers' Compensation, etc. for payroll and tracking of hours used.
- Reviews reports from plan providers to verify accuracy and resolve differences.
- Coordinates transfer of data to external vendors, plan providers, auditors, and consultant.
- Audits benefit plans for compliance with government regulations.
- Maintains knowledge of and analyzes government regulations, benefit program trends, and prevailing practices among similar organizations.
- Consults with managers and health care professionals to evaluate the need for, develop, and implement accommodations, return-to-work, light-duty, and other responses for disabled employees.
- Issues annual individual summary of benefits to employees.
- Plan and execute annual Employee's Benefits Day
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent from an accredited four year college or university
- Three to five years of related experience.
- Experience in Microsoft Office products, software networks and websites is required
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Human Resources, Payroll, Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA), Medical Privacy Act and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and General Employment Laws (State and Federal)
- Knowledge of employee benefits.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
This position may require 24 hour availability in emergency situations
