$15/hour, plus $1000 monthly housing allowance (equivalent to $20.77/hr over 40 hr workweek).

Position Title
Geologist Resource Assistant
Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
Stewards in partnership with the Tonto National Forest is seeking an intern who will gain experience in resource management activities such as:

• Forest Service land management planning and implementation;
• Geologic survey and investigation techniques and procedures used to identify management opportunities;
• Conducting geologic studies and preparing reports of findings to properly identify geologic environment, and evaluate mineral resources;
• Standard administrative procedures including programming and budgeting; and,
• Forest Service policy and procedures.

Position Responsibilities will include:

• Review a Plan of Operations (POO) for completeness and active mining site inspections
  • Work with supervisor on understanding law and policies as it relates to the 1872 mining act and reviews POOs in accordance with these procedures. Inspecting mine sites based on these procedures.
  • Pre-inspect these sites for accuracy of the plan, which may include Jeeping, OHV use and/or inspecting with other personnel on the Tonto NF.
  • Inspections of sites during active mining using Survey123.
  • Inspection of sites post reclamation to ensure reclamation is successful and properly reclaiming in accordance with the POO using Survey123.
  • Keep records of sites, record and enter data onto Survey123 and uploading onto BOX.
• Assist with site Caves and Karst management on the Forest
  • Keep detailed log of best practices and field methods for cave management.
  • Hike to potential future sites to note GPS coordinates, terrain, and activity in caves (i.e., graffiti or signs of active use).
  • Build foundation for collecting, analyzing, and logging data collected.
  • Coordinate with Central Arizona Grotto (CAG). The Tonto has a partnership with this organization.
• Assist with site inspection of Mineral Material sites, documentation and uploading material on Box drive.
  • Use survey123 to upload, catalog and inspect sites of mineral materials.
  • Hike/drive to current and potential future sites to note GPS coordinates, terrain, and activity.
  • Build foundation for collecting, analyzing, and logging data collected.
  • Coordinate with ADOT liaison on the Tonto NF/Gila County Liaison for future mineral material needs.

Minimum Requirements:

• Degree in Geology with 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.
• Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or driver's license for at least three years).

Preferred Requirements:

• Experience with ArcGIS and Survey123
• Understanding of report writing and of mine site activities/general mining.
• Understanding of the 1872 Mining Act and procedures for processing POOs.
• Understanding of NEPA.

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA's may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
