THIS ROLE IS BASED IN SAN FRANCISCO, CA. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL WORK IN THE OFFICE THREE DAYS PER WEEK.

ABOUT HOMELESS CHILDREN'S NETWORK

Homeless Children’s Network (HCN) is a leading provider of trauma-informed behavioral health services to Black/African American families in San Francisco and the hub for a network of 50+ community-based organizations and agencies citywide. They provide whole-person mental health and family support to more than 2,000 children and families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Their Afri-centric approach is built into every aspect of our work from service design to infrastructure, program delivery, community building, and healing.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Development is a hands-on, key leadership role that will be an integral part of the HCN leadership team. This position is best suited for a highly motivated individual with the energy and experience to oversee day-to-day operations of the Development and Communications department, as well as contribute to the strategic vision of the agency.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Executive Director and reports regularly to the Board of Directors. This position will manage a team of three, plus contractors.

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead all HCN’s fundraising efforts including, public funding, foundation and corporate grants, individual giving, and events.
  • Build robust individual giving and planned giving programs.
  • Manage, support, and nurture a dynamic, growing team, including a full time Grants Manager, a Major Gifts Officer (currently vacant), Development and Communications Associate and contractors who support grant writing, public relations, events and other projects.
  • Develop and apply a deep understanding of HCN’s programs to effectively tell the story to funders, donors, and others in the community.
  • Work to support the work of the Grants Manager to research, write and submit LOIs, proposals and reports. Hands-on writing is a part of this position, as well as overseeing the larger picture of institutional support.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department to produce proposal budgets and financial reports.
  • Develop and execute a robust plan for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual donors, corporate partners, and institutional prospects.
  • Partner with Board of Directors and staff to envision, plan, and execute HCN's inaugural gala event to be held in Fall 2023.
  • Communicate regularly with the various program departments to remain updated on program developments and update institutional funders and prospects on the organization’s work, accordingly.
  • Work with the development and communications teams to increase supporters’ and community awareness of HCN’s impact and programs through newsletters, fundraising collateral, and ongoing development of messaging and branding.
  • Oversee HCN’s online presence, which includes website updates, working with the Development and Communications Associate on the newsletter, and social media such as the HCN blog, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other channels.
  • Collaborate with development and administrative staff to update and maintain institutional donor records.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant local and national trends and opportunities in philanthropy and share knowledge with other team members.

COMPETENCIES

  • Minimum 3-5 years of direct or comparable experience, with recent leadership experience in major gift fundraising, and institutional development
  • Proven track record of soliciting and closing major gifts and providing thoughtful donor stewardship
  • Ability to create compelling cases for support for major donors
  • Superb writing, communications, interpersonal, and analytical skills. Highly organized and motivated, able to multitask, take initiative, and have excellent time management skills
  • Broad and strategic mindset, with creative aptitude and effective use of independent judgment
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and resilience in a high-pressure work environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising best practices
  • Experience with developing and tracking budgets, and partnering with finance as related to fundraising
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and prior nonprofit employment, required
  • Experience working with a CRM database management is a plus
