About the Department:
The Dedman School of Law Legal Clinics are celebrating their 75th Anniversary this year. They provide free legal services to those unable to afford a private lawyer. Working on SMU's campus, approximately 80 students provide free legal assistance to clients in one of the program's 10 clinics. Supervised by clinic faculty, students earn academic credit and develop valuable skills they will take with them and use throughout their career.
About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
The successful candidate will provide support, including administrative and clerical support, to faculty directors, supervisors, in the Dedman School of Law Legal Clinics serving clients in family law, child advocacy, and gender-based violence.
This is an on-campus role; however, from time to time the candidate may be asked to work off-site to support community pop-up legal clinics and other programming. Spanish speaking required.
Essential Functions:
Provide support for clinic attorneys (faculty directors, supervisors and fellows), including assistance in preparing briefs and other court documents for filing in state and federal courts.
Maintain confidential client files and law practice management database, prepare case and client reports, communicate with court staff, maintain contact lists, and respond to requests from the public.
Provide support for clinic classes and activities, including orientations, scheduling guest speakers, preparing class materials, making room reservations.
Assist with grant reporting, process expenses, and reimbursements, order supplies and provide notary services.
Provide Spanish language interpretation and back-up administrative support to other staff within the clinic.
General front desk duties, including answering phones, processing mail. and greeting visitors.
Education and Experience:
Associate's degree is required.
A minimum of one year of administrative support experience in an office setting is required. Candidate with experience in a legal setting is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently on confidential matters with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team environment. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required. Candidate must possess strong organizational skills and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects. Attention to detail is a must. Candidate with high-level competency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.
Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Paralegal degree or law office litigation experience is preferred. Candidate with notary public licensing is desired.
