The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is a contemporary art museum whose mission is to celebrate Black cultures, ignite challenging conversations, and inspire learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora. MoAD is the first and only museum dedicated to the celebration and interpretation of art, artists, and cultures from the African Diaspora. Marking its 17th anniversary in 2023, the museum continues to be a unique, cultural arts staple in the San Francisco Bay Area community.

Job Summary

MoAD, the Museum of African Diaspora, is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the African diaspora experience through engaging exhibits, educational programs, and community outreach.

As a cornerstone of the San Francisco Bay Area, MoAD showcases the history, art, and cultural richness resulting from the migration of Africans worldwide. We are in search of an experienced Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) to join our team, reporting directly to the CEO/Executive Director. The CMO will oversee our Brand, Advertising, PR, Digital Strategy, Sales, Retail, E-Commerce, Visitor Experience, and Direct Marketing.

We seek a CMO who can develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies to enhance our visibility, engage diverse audiences globally, and drive support for our mission while fostering brand loyalty. Ideal candidates will have a passion for the arts, deep nonprofit marketing understanding, and a track record of implementing creative campaigns grounded in data-driven insights.

This role requires strong change management skills, collaborative spirit, and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving. The CMO will work closely with departments to ensure alignment, develop compelling narratives, and foster audience connections. They will influence various teams to create programming that resonates with diverse audiences, guiding the museum's growth and audience loyalty.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1) Strategic Planning:

  • Lead the Marketing and PR team with integrity, building a culture of trust and collective wellbeing.
  • Develop and implement an integrated marketing strategy aligned with the museum's mission, goals, and target audience.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure marketing efforts are cohesive and support overall organizational objectives; to provide data-driven decision-making and measurable outcomes to define the MoAD Brand, engage our audience, and support our mission and strategy.
  • Conduct regular market research and competitor analysis to identify emerging trends and opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain budgets for the PR & Marketing divisions operations and activities.

2) Brand Management:

  • Manage and enhance the museum's brand identity, ensuring consistency across all communications and materials.
  • Oversee the development of marketing collateral, ensuring it reflects the
  • museum's values and resonates with diverse audiences.
  • Establish and enforce brand guidelines to maintain a cohesive and recognizable brand image.
  • Lead efforts to create strategic, brand-building work that resonates with audiences to increase the reach and relevance of the MoAD brand globally.
  • Ensure top-quality creative work that represents the brand, speak to targeted audience segments, and communicates the marketing message- ensuring that all campaigns exude creativity, inclusivity and are applied strategically.
  • Support development of retail merchandising, e-commerce, and store experience to grow retail revenues, profitability, visitor engagement and visitor loyalty.

3) Audience Engagement:

  • Identify and analyze target audiences, developing strategies to reach and engage diverse communities.
  • Implement data-driven approaches to understand visitor behavior and preferences, adapting marketing efforts accordingly.
  • Foster community partnerships and collaborations to expand the museum's reach and impact.
  • Analyze and understand the visitor journey from visit to donor and, in collaboration with other departments, support the active cultivation of those relationships.
  • Develop and lead execution of improvements to visitor experience that result in growth in return visits, membership conversation, and reputation enhancement for MoAD.
  • Create and maintain fact-based analyses of impact on audience awareness, engagement and loyalty to gauge the effectiveness of our actions.

4) Digital Marketing:

  • Lead the development of the museum's online presence, including website management, social media, email marketing, and digital advertising.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to maximize the museum's digital reach.
  • Implement data analytics tools to measure the effectiveness of digital
  • campaigns and make data-driven optimizations.
  • Lead efforts to develop innovative tactics to reach target audiences via social media, voice, paid media, SO, SEM and new emerging media and marketing platforms.

5) Public Relations:

  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with media outlets, influencers, and community stakeholders.
  • Oversee the creation of press releases, media kits, and other communications materials.
  • Develop crisis communication strategies and serve as the primary spokesperson when needed.
  • Be an external face of MoAD; effectively represent the museum with broad array of constituents, including promotional partners, community, arts and business, government, and other leaders.
  • Serve as primary staff lead to the Marketing and Communications Committee to the Board.

6) Event Promotion:

  • Collaborate with event planning teams to promote exhibitions, programs, and special events.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to drive attendance and participation in museum activities.
  • Evaluate the success of events through post-event analysis, identifying areas for improvement and future success.

7) Fundraising Support:

  • Work closely with the development team to integrate marketing efforts into fundraising campaigns.
  • Leverage marketing strategies to enhance donor engagement and support sponsorship initiatives.
  • Develop and execute targeted campaigns to drive financial support from both individual and corporate donors.
  • Build strategic alliances and partnerships, and foster relationships with partners through co-marketing efforts to diversify revenue streams.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Required: Undergraduate degree; advanced degree in business or marketing preferred.
  • Proven 10+ years in senior marketing, developing and executing brand strategies across various channels.
  • Passionate about brand creation, growth, and innovation.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing, including social media, SEO, and email campaigns.
  • Strategic PR and marketing expertise driving business growth, adapting to market trends.
  • Skilled in long-term planning, crisis response, and team leadership.
  • Culturally aware, adept at setting inclusive goals and building committed teams.
  • Experienced in developing and leading teams to advance MoAD's brand.
  • Proficient at both strategic planning and execution.
  • Expertise in developing, implementing, and evaluating marketing plans and research.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and analytic skills.
  • Track record of modernizing legacy brands and diversifying audiences.
  • Financially savvy, adept at budgeting and organizational management.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure, adapt to change, and stay focused on goals.
  • Familiarity with museum operations, the arts industry, or arts marketing preferred.
  • Knowledge of Bay Area businesses, media, tourism, and hospitality networks beneficial.

Compensation Range:

$125,000 – $175,000, full-time (40+ hours), full benefits. Anticipated
