Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to prepare and teach a wide variety of social work courses at the Bachelor and Master’s level of the Social Work program. This position is also responsible for cross program advising towards academic and career success. The Assistant Professor is essential to the School if it is to be true to its mission of providing a quality education for the development of professional social workers. The position is needed to meet the number and qualification requirements of faculty members according to the Council on Social Work Education, the accrediting body for social work education programs.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Teaching Excellence/Advisement/Counseling
- The Assistant Professor will be expected to teach across both levels (Bachelors and Masters).
- The Assistant Professor must participate in the advising of students regarding curriculum and career matters, and model professional and scholarly behavior.
- The Assistant Professor is expected to provide field education support by performing duties of field liaison, reviewing students’ education folders, and transcripts for field placement, and conduct assessment interview with students to determine the student’s readiness for entering field.
- The Assistant Professor will carry out other field liaison duties as assigned, assist students in their internship and/or field placement experience, be responsible for on-going evaluations of students field practicum experience, be available for field students and agency field instructors to provide consultation regarding field placement and to facilitate the resolution of problems that may arise in consultation with field director.
- The Assistant Professor is expected to write and present scholarly papers for publication and presentations to professional organizations, submit proposals for funding, assist in planning conferences and workshops, engage in curriculum planning and revision, participate in ongoing program evaluation, and update and revise course outlines and syllabi.
- The Assistant Professor is expected to serve on committees at the departmental, school, college and university levels; to maintain office hours of no less than 10 hours per week; and to satisfy her/his contractual obligation to the university regarding Founders’ and Honor’s Day convocations and commencement participation.
- The Assistant Professor is expected to participate in recruitment of students and work toward the development of student leadership through authorized student organizations.
- The Assistant Professor must participate in continuing professional development. They are expected to attend at least one meeting, workshop or conference that advances the state of knowledge in social work. They are expected to review library holdings and remain current with trends in social work education and practice.
- The Assistant Professor must become involved with local, regional, and national boards and commissions. They are expected to hold membership and to be active in professional organizations, and provide community service.
- The Assistant Professor is expected to maintain a Licensed Master of Social Work or above in good standing with the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners.
- The Assistant Professor performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean
Qualifications
Minimum:
- A MSW degree and a minimum of five (5) years of post-master’s social work practice as well as an earned doctorate in social work or closely related field.
- The faculty member must hold a Louisiana Master of Social Work license and be in good standing.
- The Assistant Professor is expected to be capable of teaching in at least two of the following areas: Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Social Work Research/Statistics, Social Work Practice and Social Welfare Policy.
