Job Description:


Title: Assistant Dean of Academic Advising and Pathways


Unit: Non-Unit Professional (NUP)

General Summary: The Assistant Dean of Academic Advising and Pathways is a dynamic and knowledgeable individual who is part of a leadership team that is responsible for the development and implementation of timely and diverse advising services and programming. The Assistant Dean of Academic Advising and Pathways is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Academic Advising offices, including the supervision and evaluation of departmental staff. The Assistant Dean will lead advising staff in developing and implementing advising processes and resources to support the college's efforts in academic and career pathways and the completion agenda. Other responsibilities include providing student orientation, mentoring, Advising and other services to enhance students' success from entry to completion of their academic program. This essential role supports the college's mission by leading efforts to enhance student success through effective academic Advising and innovative pathway programs. The Assistant Dean oversees the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Advising services and academic pathway initiatives that foster student engagement, retention, and completion and is responsible for all aspects of student advising, including pathways, academic, transfer, and specialized populations including management of Veteran Resources, Credit for Prior Learning, and Equity Transfer Initiative. The Assistant Dean of Academic Advising and Pathways provides direction and oversight for services to support the Veteran Resource Center and the Credit for Prior Learning Program.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provide leadership for the advising area by assisting in the creation and maintenance of an overall vision and direction for services and programming which includes identifying and prioritizing resource needs; scheduling personnel; planning and assessment of events and programming and documenting area accomplishments.
  • Lead the strategic planning and execution of academic Advising and pathway programs, emphasizing equitable access and outcomes for all students. Develop and implement pathway programs that align with student career and transfer goals.
  • Develop, implement, and assess initiatives specifically designed to remove systemic barriers to success for marginalized student populations. Foster an inclusive advising culture that respects and addresses the diverse needs of the student body.
  • Assist in the hiring, interviewing, orientation/training, supervision and evaluation of staff of full and part time professional academic advisors as well as a cadre of seasonal faculty advisors. Provide direct supervision and evaluation of designated staff.
  • Assess departmental needs and deliver continuous Professional Development opportunities for professional staff.
  • Provide leadership, overall vision, and direction for the Veteran Resource Center, including the supervision of the Director of the Veteran Resource Center, department programming and resources, and the oversite of the Veteran Affairs Education Certification process and auditing process.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Admission and the Director of Admission to develop to further develop and implement a pathway, academic, and transfer advising model for concurrent dual enrollment students.
  • Provide supervision to the Coordinator of Prior Learning, developing a vision and institution plan that introduces all students the Credit for Prior Learning program, providing transferable credit for academically related work experience, military experience, training programs, or other relative experience.
  • Work closely with academic departments, faculty, and other campus services to integrate advising with academic and student support initiatives. Build partnerships with external stakeholders to support academic pathways, academic advising, and career planning.
  • Provide leadership in the implementation of academic and career pathways; including defining advising processes and protocols, implementation of academic maps and Pathways maps, development of online advising tools and resources.
  • Manage and mentor the advising team, ensuring advisors are trained on up-to-date equity-focused advising practices and are informed of and responsive to challenges faced by diverse student groups.
  • Enhance advising models and develop new initiatives to support diverse student populations. Evaluate program effectiveness using data-driven metrics and make adjustments as needed.
  • Develop schedule, update presentation, gather assessment data, collaborate with other departments.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of high quality academic advisor and faculty training programs as necessary to insure effective academic advising services to students.
  • Take a leadership role in the development and dissemination of web-based and printed resources for students, faculty and staff to insure that information is accurate, timely and effective.
  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of technology mediated advising tools, such as Degree Works and online advising tools necessary to support effective academic advising.
  • Supervise Academic Progress area to ensure consistency for college processes/policies and to facilitate an integrated academic advising experience for at risk students on probation in tandem with Academic and Student Affairs personnel.
  • Ensure advising practices comply with college policies and accreditation standards and actively promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Serve as a proactive advocate for students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring they receive support addressing their specific circumstances. Act as student advocate to identify and remove barriers to student success. Develop interventions for at-risk populations and promote equity through advising services.
  • Manage budgets to strategically allocate resources to support key college initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an annual departmental assessment plan; collecting and analyzing the required assessment data, reporting the departmental outcomes and developing and disseminating an annual improvement plan based on the outcomes.
  • Promotes and maintains responsive community relations
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Requirements:


  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in academic advising, student services, or a related area in a higher education setting, with progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead equity-centered advising programs and academic pathways.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and inspire a diverse team.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of fostering collaboration across departments and improving student outcomes.
  • Deep understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented student populations in higher education.
  • Knowledge of best practices in Advising and student retention strategies.
  • Experience with budget management and resource allocation
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.


Additional Information:


Salary Range: $95,000 - $105,000 actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Employees of Middlesex Community College are considered employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and receive benefits, which include:

Location: Bedford campus with occasional travel to Lowell as needed


Hours: 37.5 hoursper week, schedule to be determined upon hire. This position will be eligible for a maximum of two days of telework in accordance with the College's telework policy.
