Position Summary:

Job SummaryThe Operations Assistant (OA) position seeks to help other students and departments on campus with tasks requiring two or more OAs at a time. Each task is varied, and we’ll try to have you doing things that you are comfortable doing and/or what you’ll succeed in—whichever comes first. An OA, simply put, is willing to help when they are needed the most. This position does not require a driver’s license, but having one is preferred. This position is non-benefited, part time, temporary position. This position is defined as a non-exempt position under FLSA regulations.
Specific ResponsibilitiesHere are some departments, shifts and tasks we are looking to have OAs be a part of during the semester:

  • Facilities (7:30am – 3:30pm, operating hours)
    • Newly hired OAs are required to work for Facilities for a minimum of two hours twice a week for two weeks. Once they complete at least two weeks at Facilities, they will be eligible for work in other departments (after-hours shifts, the mailroom, night rounds, student transport, etc.) unless an emergency arises in which they are needed sooner.
    • Past tasks for Facilities include changing batteries, fixing small and manageable issues within buildings, moving furniture, picking up litter, watering flowers, etc. No overly physical tasks will be assigned to OAs.

  • Facilities (5:00pm – 11:00pm, after hours)
    • Being available in Lower Degenstein Event Management Student Office, OAs can help after hours by putting eyes on situations for Facilities. If the situation is dire, then the OA on duty would call up. This is available in two-hour periods (5pm-7pm, 7pm-9pm, 9pm-11pm)
    • OAs would solve situations such as unclogging toilets, fixing fan units, changing light bulbs, blocking off bathrooms if needed, etc. Tasks from Facilities would get assigned weekly. No overly physical tasks will be assigned to OAs.
    • OAs can potentially be called to handle clean-up situations that involve blood, vomit, and glass. Training for these situations and proper cleaning materials will be provided.
These shifts do not count for the required introductory Facilities hours and will be made available after that takes place.
  • Campus Safety
    • Safety night rounds on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:30pm to 11pm & 11pm to 12:30am*
    • Parking lot management and direction for home sports games, Admissions, events, etc.
    • On-campus student transports*
    • Off-campus emergency student transports, could be called at any time**
    • Off-campus emergency student transports are only to pre-approved locations or 30 minutes away from campus.
Golf cart certification would be required; student would need a valid driver’s license and to complete basic training for this specific task.Mini-van driving certification would be required; student would need a valid driver’s license and to complete basic training for this specific task.
  • Mailroom
    • Working in the mailroom at various times Monday – Saturday based on student’s availability and demand from the mailroom *
Golf cart certification would be required; student would need a valid driver’s license and to complete basic training for this specific task.
  • Print Shop
Working in the Print Shop at various times Monday — Friday based on student’s availability and demand from the Print ShopTasks include cutting and stapling print copies of items, punching out holes, etc.
Learning Objectives
  • Gain training from other OAs, Facilities and/or different departments on campus
  • Develop skills to prioritize demands and tasks
  • Develop skills to work with various constituents, including students/staff/faculty/community members
  • Develop the following Career Competencies: critical thinking & problem solving, oral/written communications, teamwork/collaboration, leadership, professionalism & work ethic, and global/intercultural fluency
Required Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Have and maintain a basic understanding and remembrance of functions regarding the areas of Facilities Management, Campus Safety, and/or Residence Life.
  • Be able to effectively communicate with other Operations Assistants, Operations Assistant Managers, the Director of Operations Assistants, and the Operations Coordinator.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and ability to work well in a team.
  • Must have excellent work ethic, attention to detail determination in all tasks assign
  • Must have skills to move and complete tasks assigned quickly and effectively.
  • Must be able to use technology effectively.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to stay organized while managing multiple tasks.
  • Common sense and the ability to work under pressure are essential.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA, and good standing with university conduct process.

ExperienceNo previous experience required.
Additional Requirements
  • This position is paid $8.75 per hour and can average up to 10-20 hours per week.
  • Golf cart certification and mini-van certification through SU Risk Management, if applicable
    • Students without a license can still apply for this job.
  • Students will be assigned online training through SU Risk Management once you start the job.
  • Integrity and confidentiality are required.
    • You may be granted access to residential dorms, closets, basements, attic areas, academic buildings, offices, and/or campus vehicles through signed out keys, swipe access through ID cards, etc.
    • You may not, under any circumstances, access these or any space on-campus without the direct permission from the current Operations Coordinator, regardless of if you are on or off duty.
    • Misuse of these held items will follow disciplinary action, suspension and/or termination from the position

Physical Demand
  • Ability to work in atypical weather conditions (wind, light/mid-heavy rain, snow, etc.)
  • Ability to remain seated in a normal position or remain standing for long periods of time.
  • Ability to reach out with hands and arms.
  • Ability to talk and hear and verbally express information or instructions.
  • Ability to use hands to grasp objects, type, pick up objects, move objects or hold objects.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl.
  • Ability to climb stairs and/or ladders.
  • Ability to pick up, push or pull up to 20 pounds safely and carry up to 10 feet.
Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience working in a team is strongly preferred. Working on a college campus in a residential setting (student work experience is acceptable).
