Position Summary
Job Summary
Most microscopic unicellular eukaryote phytoplankton in the oceans are mixoplankton, species that behave both as a plant and as an animal, by combining photosynthesis and predation. This dual nutritional capacity affects their ecology, but not much is known about how and why they feed.
In the Charvet Lab, we focus on a lineage of small mixoplankton, the prasinophytes, who feed on bacteria when nutrient concentrations become too low for photosynthetic growth. We want to determine how they recognize and ingest their prey.
This summer, a team of two students, will study the gene expression of the receptors that prasinophytes probably use to capture their prey. This position is defined as a non-exempt position under FLSA regulations.

Specific Responsibilities
You will be working in the cellular and molecular laboratory of the biology department. This research project will provide you with the opportunity to learn to work under axenic conditions with live phytoplankton cultures, design reproducible experiments, and use tools of the molecular biologists such as PCR and qPCR.
