Job description

Summary
The Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) seeks a full-time Education & Training Specialist with a proven history of high-quality employment services provision, to provide culturally responsive services to women experiencing Homelessness. The Education & Training Specialist will support DWC’s general workforce development programing, both onsite and in the community, provide individual employment and education navigation services, and conduct employer engagement. The position will work collaboratively with the college admissions and financial aid advisors in the Los Angeles area to meet the demands of the workforce. The coordinator will enroll participants experiencing or having histories of homelessness with a goal of securing long-term employment in a high-growth field. Participants will be connected to foundational training for growth-sector employment.
Essential Functions
  • Connect program participants to foundational training for growth sector employment to be successful in their apprenticeship program.
  • Connect participants interested in non-traditional jobs such as medical field, construction, welder, electrician, and computer technician.
  • Provide trauma-informed wraparound services such as workshops/trainings, professional clothing, career series, access to the learning center for job-readiness services, and distribute resources all while participants are fulfilling the requirements of their training.
  • Prepare participants with limited work experience or long gaps of unemployment through the Career Series workshops, and apprenticeship training of a specified trade.
  • Participants will receive training through transitional employment at our on-site employment social enterprise, MADE by DWC (Downtown Women s Center) or partners who provide training.
  • Share the program and enrollment information during Orientation about the Workforce Development department, the Learning Center for the job-readiness program, and workshops/trainings with the Day Center, Case Managers and participants who are seeking high-quality employment services.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with business and industry, workforce and economic development agencies, and a variety of education and training organizations.
  • Identify new and emerging employee training opportunities that align with economic market trends and industry workforce needs for those participants seeking high-quality employment and education services.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops and resources available to support education, training, and apprenticeship to participants experiencing homelessness.
  • Actively market and promote the Workforce Development department services and professional and technical education to local businesses, industry, and community for those seeking higher employment and education.
  • Facilitate training sessions and/or workshops as needed.
  • Assist participants with employment applications and work to complete a resume and provides ongoing assistance in their job search and development of job-related skills.
  • Coordinate DWC’s workforce development programming through recruitment of participants, conducting orientations, program scheduling, and coordinating a continuum of support across the agency to assist with employment and education obtainment
  • Conduct 1-on-1 job readiness activities with clients, including resume building, practice interviews, job applications, computer tutorials, cover letters, reference lists, and job search guidance
  • Other duties as assigned to support the mission of the organization.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. This position would also require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Mondays-Fridays 8:30am 5:00pm.
Travel
Regular travel throughout Los Angeles County is required in this position.
Work Remotely:
Option for hybrid work schedule but with expectation to work onsite full time as scheduled.
Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of the complex barriers surrounding women’s homelessness and unemployment
  • Experience working with issues of homelessness, trauma, and mental health preferred
  • Advanced computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and ability to build relationships with women, coworkers, and community partners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, implement plans, and meet deadlines.
  • Active listening and problem-solving skills, a solution-oriented attitude, and good judgment
  • Experience serving as a mentor or program counselor
  • Knowledge of culturally responsible interventions

  • Must be a CA resident and live at least 80 miles from the office and must be available for in-person meetings at the DWC offices.
  • Valid California Driver's license, proof of active insurance, and good driving record.
  • Must provide documentation of a negative TB test result within the last twelve months, on first day of hire.
  • You will be required to have received at least the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination to start employment with DWC, and second dose must be received within 30-days from the first day of hire.
Pay Range
$23.07/hourly
Work Authorization/Security Clearance
Being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment. DWC does not sponsor employment visas, such as H-1B.
