Job description

I. Job Summary

The Senior Systems/Network Administrator is a member of a team-oriented staff that has the responsibility of providing Wayne Memorial Hospital with advanced SYSTEMS/NETWORK administration and support. He/she will be responsible for the technical design, planning, implementation, and the highest level of performance tuning and recovery procedures for mission critical enterprise systems. The Sr. Administrator will serve as a technical expert in the area of 1-1 system/network administration for all of the complex operating systems at the hospital. Also, recommends the redesign and configuration of operating systems and system applications. Investigates and analyzes feasibility of system requirements and develops system specifications. Identifies methods, solutions, and provides project support and management in order to provide a high level of service and reports results to the Information Systems Director. The Senior Systems/Network Administrator reports to the Director of Information Systems.

Latitude

The Sr. Systems/Network Administrator must have very strong leadership skills; decision making authority and knowledge of hospital policies, procedures and operations. Also, must have excellent communication and organizational skills, respect of hospital departments, and working knowledge of all departments' location of equipment and LAN drops. Must be detail/results oriented and have the ability to train others effectively. Unresolved problems or suspected errors could be detrimental to the Information Systems Department as well as other departments throughout the hospital. Actively participates in system support and must have the ability to work effectively with other departments.
Ability to: Plan, organize and document complex system design activities and to configure systems to be consistent with institutional policies/procedures; communicate technical/complex information both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility; perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively.

II. Duties And Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the WMH servers by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair. Ensures that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained. Applies revisions to host system hardware and software. Works with vendors to assist support activities.
  • Develop new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability. Update and Provision servers according to software company specifications. Responsible for deployments/rollouts and upgrades of all software.
  • Supervises work direction of Network/Systems Administrator, PC Support/Network Specialist, contract staff and/or summer help.
  • Perform troubleshooting as required. As such, leads problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors and other support personnel.
  • Installs, modifies and maintains system software on servers. Provides server support related to all systems.
  • Establish guidelines and methods for the installation and management of computer operating systems, disk arrays, switches, tape libraries, SANs and other components.
  • Ensure high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical host computer resources.
  • Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse. Works with Systems/Network Administrators in conjunction with SilverSky to guard against network vulnerability.
  • Develop procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications. Maintains and logs such processes from Iron Mountain and INS backup and recovery.
  • Develops and coordinates project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impact on staff, physicians and/or hospital. Provides leadership in planning and implementation of projects for computer operations and enterprise systems administration.
  • Implement monitoring, configuration management and alerting functions that will make a hands-off environment. Monitor system performance and utilization of all systems. Work with System Care to make sure all servers are up and performing to top capability.
  • Manage the data center and servers including hardware, software and equipment such as air- conditioning system settings for data center and UPS's (uninterrupted power system).
  • Install, configure, and document new servers and applications.
  • Manage fileservers (shared folders, quotas, security, etc.)
  • Proactively manage and maintain server, network and firewall systems
  • Administer and support core Microsoft, Cisco, Citrix Workstation and VMware technologies. Experienced with server virtualization technologies.
  • 1 7. Implement project plans, risk assessments and contingency plans per HIPP A Standards.
    • Work with TFS on an ongoing basis to develop these plans. Advise I.S. Director of progress.
  • Maintain inventory and asset configuration documentation of all servers and computers in conjunction with the Systems/Network Administrators.
  • Assist with hardware, firewall, telecom and software vendor evaluation, recommendation and negotiations.
  • Managing in excess of 50 Windows Server infrastructures.
  • Stay current with technological developments in SYSTEMS/NETWORK administration technology and recommends ways for WMH to take advantage of new technology.
  • Maintains confidentiality of business, patient, and employee information without exception.
  • Share on-call on rotational basis.
  • Other duties as assigned by I.S. Director.
  • Employee authorization for access to EPHI is determined by job function and is under the direction of his/her Department Director or Nurse Manager.
  • Employee will be required to be readily available to work during any weather related incidents or other natural disasters and/or any emergency situations that may arise.

III. Education

Associate's degree in Computer Science or related discipline is required. Five years work experience in systems design, programming, systems software, hardware, and support is required. Education in Windows Server Technology, SQL Server, Active Directory, SAN Technology, and LAN Management is required. Certification in Windows Technology is preferred.

IV. Qualifications And Experience

EXPERIENCE WITH: Programming languages and operating systems; current equipment and technologies in use; system administration, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, and system performance monitoring tools; effective project management techniques; advanced knowledge of Windows Server software and desktop Operating Systems; Active Directory user and group administration; Group Policy design and configuration; a solid understanding of LAN/WAN networking; LAN Routing and Switching design, configuration and troubleshooting (VLANs, IP Subnetting).

V. Physical Demands

Must be able to do the following on a constant, ongoing basis:

  • Hear and understand face-to-face and phone conversations.
  • See sufficiently to read instructions, use a PC or Laptop, use a calculator for mathematical computations and audit errors.
  • Converse appropriately with individuals both inside and outside the hospital.
  • Give and receive simple and complex instructions.
  • Read and understand written language
  • Concentrate on and remember varied job duties.
  • Prioritize work of position.
  • Solve problems ranging from simple to complex.
  • Use both hands for typing and data entry.
  • Lift and carry 25-50 pounds on a daily basis.
  • Climb stairs when necessary.
  • Sit for long periods of time.
  • Server Maintenance may include reaching, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, climbing, twisting, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tasks.

VI. Working Conditions

Working environment includes typical computer related noise levels, paper, equipment generated dust and sometimes cold server and communication rooms. Work also performed in a well lighted, heated and cooled office with high level of activity. To accomplish the task at hand must be compatible to work closely with others for long periods of time.
