About the Role
GHIC is seeking a Research Alliance Manager to manage sourcing, scoping, and execution of sponsored research engagements with partners including universities, research institutes and biotechnology companies. This individual will be critical to supporting and growing GHIC's non-dilutive funding capabilities, which were recently funded through a pioneering partnership with the U.S. government's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). Sponsored research engagements will support projects that approach persistent problems in health security in new ways. These engagements will span early discovery and translational development of novel medical countermeasures (MCMs), non-MCM disruptive technologies, and biosecurity ecosystem building activities, among others.
In this role, the Research Alliance Manager will be critical to, i) sourcing potential funding opportunities via proactive engagement with leading universities and research institutes in the realm of health security, ii) scoping priority research activities to drive actionable insights, and iii) executing and managing grants and contracts to operationalize these activities. Further, this individual will work with GHIC's internal research function to set scientific strategy and priorities for the initiative and identify potential partners to implement these insights. This role will require an individual capable of marrying the scientific knowledge required to scope research priorities, with the business acumen to identify translatable research and communication skills to develop and grow relationships with diverse stakeholders across the realm of health security in industry, academia and government.
Responsibilities
- Work with GHIC's research team to set scientific priorities and strategy for the non-dilutive funding initiative, including reviewing scientific literature, conducting expert interviews and attending industry and academic conferences
- Build and manage relationships with leading scientific researchers at U.S. universities, research institutions or non-profit organizations to build a pipeline of research funding opportunities aligned with GHIC strategy
- Develop scopes of work with research partners, evaluate and justify cost estimates, execute grants or contracts to implement, and actively manage research projects
- Work with GHIC investment team to help build views and generate insights to support new avenues for medical counter measure research
- Work with GHIC's research team to generate actionable insights to inform GHIC's investment strategy via deep dives on relevant topics for internal purposes and generation of publishable reports and presentations to convey findings
- Proactively identify issues, potential conflicts, and risks. Work with GHIC team to drive resolution, manage and reduce complexity, preempt issues and facilitate conflict resolution
- Monitor and report on key deliverables and timelines
- Conduct periodic assessments of the alliances, managing scorecards and metrics, monitor the impact and effectiveness of partnerships, identify areas of strength/weakness and improvement.
Qualifications and Required Skills
- Degree in life sciences or related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 2-10 years of professional experience in R&D, preferably in tech transfer, strategic alliance management, external innovation, business development, or related roles within the biotech, pharmaceutical sectors (title will be commensurate with experience)
- Relevant experience assessing R&D projects cost for their reasonableness and providing appropriate justification of costs for a given scope of project
- Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills with a demonstrated ability to convey complex concepts in a concise and approachable manner
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment with a willingness to take on diverse roles and responsibilities as they may arise
- Willingness to travel to visit potential partners or attend relevant scientific or industry conferences
The expected base salary range for this role is $130k - $200k. This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus. Actual base salary offers will be based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, experience, and qualifications. Exceptional candidates may be considered for a senior associate role.
