Job Description
The Public Relations Specialist works as a member of a team of professionals that comprise the Marketing and Communications Office and serves as the Public Relations coordinator within the office's role and scope. The Public Relations Specialist works directly with the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications in the development and implementation of Public Relations, marketing and communications activities conducted by the Marketing and Communications Office of South Plains College. * This is not a remote position. *
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Defining the college's Public Relations goals by developing and implementing strategies to maintain and grow the college's public image.

  • Cultivating strong relationships with local, regional, state, and national media outlets and journalists to ensure efficient communication and maximum coverage.

  • Manages the College's news service which includes the writing and distribution of news releases and publicity items which publicize college events, activities, official announcements, faculty, student and alumni achievement and other newsworthy items of public interest.

  • Responsible for writing, editing, and proofing of the employee newsletter and other internal employee communications activities.

  • Research and write features, articles and promotional copy used in producing college publications, brochures, flyers, website, social media, and recruiting literature produced by the Marketing and Communications, as needed.

  • Maintains accurate records which document news service and publicity activities for planning and evaluation.

  • Working with the marketing and communications team to plan and implement campaigns aimed at increasing brand awareness.

  • Performs any other duties which are deemed necessary by the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications and/or President of the College.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum, bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, or related field of study.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Experience in applying current computer technology and software applications to essential responsibilities, duties, and tasks. Photography, graphic design skills and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite are a plus.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple and complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence and reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to students, visitors, faculty, and other employees of the organization.
WRITING AND REPORTING SKILLS
Superb writing skills and knowledge of press release style guides.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Ability to work with a wide variety of people and participate as a team member to accomplish multiple projects and goals. Ability to meet and greet the public in a positive and productive way.
ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS
Ability to organize tasks and activities essential to performing the specific duties and responsibilities of this job. Ability to organize multiple projects and tasks and meet production deadlines.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.
