The Field Museum's Keller Science Action Center (KSAC) translates museum science and collections into results for conservation and quality of life. Our interdisciplinary team of ecologists, social scientists, community engagement specialists, and outdoor educators share a vision that all communities and neighborhoods are connected to healthy, thriving nature. The Chicago Region program is organized as four initiatives, including the City of Chicago, Calumet, Pembroke, and Monarchs & Pollinators. We work through networks such as the Chicago Wilderness Alliance and Calumet Heritage Partnership to advance our vision.
The Monarchs & Pollinators Engagement Coordinator creates clear and inspiring informational products that advance the KSAC's mission of translating museum science and expertise into results for conservation and quality of life. The Coordinator supports this mission by delivering communication and engagement materials and project an/or research proposals as part of the Center's Chicago Region Monarch & Pollinator Initiative (M&P). The Coordinator is visionary and creative and can create tools that cultivate inquiry into the natural world, foster cultural connection, and inspire conservation action by promoting native plants and native pollinators. This position also supports the M&P team's community science pilots by managing community science data with integrity and supporting community scientists on how best to conserve monarchs and pollinators in urban areas. The Coordinator effectively interacts with museum guests, inside and outside of the museum, to answer questions from and relay information. The Coordinator uses effective science translation, engagement, and communication skills, and a detail-oriented approach to develop resources geared towards the general public. The Monarchs & Pollinators Engagement Coordinator reports to the Lead Conservation Ecologist and works closely with the Lead Conservation Ecologist and the Monarch & Pollinators team at large.
The Monarchs & Pollinators Engagement Coordinator is a temporary, part-time position working 28 hrs/wk for four months. The ideal start time is late April.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop education, outreach, and engagement tools to inspire inquiry from the general public on the topics of native plants and native pollinators, including ecological significance, cultural connections, and quality of life impacts.
- Develop a communications plan and write communications materials, such as newsletters and email correspondence with the public.
- Support community science pilots, e.g. managing and reviewing the quality of data collected by community scientists, and conducting literature reviews.
- Coordinate logistics for public engagement events and digital and outdoor training workshops.
- Conduct limited fieldwork, including attending Pollinator Week and other events, as needed.
- Incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion and justice into their work.
- Support Environmental Social Scientist & Lead Conservation Ecologist with tasks as requested.
Qualifications:
- At least three years of experience in community engagement or Bachelor's degree in communications, graphic design, biological or social science, library or information science, or a related field. A combination of education and experience also acceptable.
- Comfort engaging with people of all ages, backgrounds, identities, education levels, and experiences
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrating competency in communicating with the public about complex science topics, including conservation issues
- Proficiency in MS Office, G-Suite, and Zoom and ability to manage datasets in spreadsheets, make presentations and flyers, and participate in and lead virtual meetings.
- Self-motivated, results-oriented, flexible, communicative, and collaborative individual with strong interpersonal and follow-up skills
- Experience developing, implementing, and managing multiple processes/projects in tandem
- High level of understanding of local ecological and cultural conservation topics around native plants and native pollinators
- Commitment to continued learning in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion competencies
- Spanish-language fluency preferred
