Description
Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development (BUILD, Inc.) seeks a committed, self-motivated, enthusiastic professional to join the Community Engagement Team as Community Engagement Coordinator .
Since 1969, BUILD has worked in some of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods giving at-risk youth alternatives to the violence that takes away their positive potential. Applying our model of positive youth development, BUILD seeks to redirect the behavior of gang-affiliated youth and potential gang recruits to improve their chances of leading fulfilling lives and to increase the stability and safety of the communities in which they reside.
The Community Engagement Coordinator will supervise and support staff in planning, facilitating, documenting, and reporting Community Engagement programs and activities as assigned by the Manager of Community Engagement. The Community Engagement Coordinator will actively engage with the communities that BUILD serves by providing resources, meaningful interactions and activities that benefit youth and families.
The Community Engagement Coordinator reports directly to the Manager of Community Engagement.
Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with community stakeholders including residents, schools, churches, elected officials, nonprofits, local government, and others to identify and refer at risk youth and their families to relevant programs within BUILD.
  • Supervise events related to partnership and community recruitment at partner sites.
  • Connect and recruit community youth members with BUILD programs that cover comprehensive services.
  • Research and identify appropriate partnerships that could lead to long-term sustainable community communities.
  • Assist and support the Community Engagement Manager to oversee the implementation of PlayStreets activations within Chicago's north, west, and south sides. of Chicago.PlaySreets
  • Assist in recruiting and training community-based organizations (CBO) in program implementation and evaluation standards by providing them with information about the objectives of Playstreets.
  • Supporting the CBOs to implement PlayStreets activations, including providing equipment for, publicizing, setting up, and cleaning up for PlayStreets activation.
  • Attending and participating in coordinating meetings with local partners and city departments including, the Department of Transportation and Police Department to identify resources to be provided at PlayStreets activations.
  • Fulfilling the logistical requirements associated with the PlayStreets program including, applying for street closure permits and conducting background checks for adults supervising PlayStreets activations.
  • Assist the Coordinator of the Apprenticeship Mentorship Program (AMP) to ensure that all AMP Mentors are effectively providing mentees with the appropriate training and delivering the approved curriculum designed to teach mentees guidance, wisdom, leadership, accountability, empowerment, and self-confidence.
  • Manage the Access to Justice (A2J) to ensure that all reports are on time and deliverables are on track to meet the 85% benchmark for the fiscal year. Supervise community wellness navigators on the team and ensure they meet the A2J objectives.
  • Input data for all initial client assessments detailing their related legal issues
  • presenting Know Your Rights presentations and coordinating with Legal Aid to hold Expungement clinic workshops
  • providing legal service information at all community outreach events
  • Writing monthly narrative reports on the impact of the A2J funding has on BUILD.
  • Create and implement an annual outreach planning in collaboration with the Manager of Community Engagement. Maintains a professional demeanor in the field on a flexible schedule, which includes late evenings and weekends.
  • Works with school administration, government agencies, and other non-profit organizations to maintain a healthy partnership with constant communication.
  • Collaborate with internal department coordinators and managers to coordinate event planning

Documentation and Competencies:
  • Ability to effectively supervise and lead Community Engagement staff and volunteers in Community Engagement activities, including but not limited to door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, one-to-one conversations, and community meetings.
  • Willingness to actively participate in community-wide coalitions, committees, and block clubs. This includes events, publications, one-on-one outreach and recruiting new volunteers and community leadership.
  • To collect information from residents and stakeholders while supporting sustainable efforts and creating new engagement opportunities.
  • Engaging local stakeholders and decision-makers in conversations, planning and organizing around issues that affect the communities BUILD serves.
  • Document and report on work related tasks on a regular basis. Submit statistics and reports as needed.

Communication and relationship management:
  • Represents the agency to broaden community awareness and support, interpreting the agency's programs and services.
  • Attends departmental and agency-wide staff meetings, as scheduled and agency-wide events, as required.
  • Maintains knowledge current in the field including but not limited to, participation in coursework, seminars, and workshops.

Other:
  • Support the Peace & Justice Center initiative and restorative justice outreach throughout the communities BUILD serves.
  • Participate in agency outreach and recruitment events, including evenings and weekends.
  • Participate in civic engagement activities that advance the mission of BUILD, Inc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least three (3) years' experience in organizing and community leadership development.
  • Must have at least two (2) years' experience as an active member or leading community-wide networks and coalitions.
  • At least three (3) years of experience managing a high performing team of two or more people.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Including the ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse range of people.
  • Strong ties to all communities BUILD serves and/or Chicago's West Side.
  • Experience in public speaking, and facilitation of meetings, training or focus groups.
  • Trained in Restorative Justice (RJ) Practices.
  • Must have valid driver's license and have access to reliable transportation.
  • Must pass Child Endangerment & Violence screenings, Illinois State Background Check & Federal Fingerprints.
  • Successfully pass the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) fingerprint background check (USP, FBI, and local criminal record) and Department of Children & Family Services Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System.

Physical Demands
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, seeing & hearing.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 15 pounds at times.
