The Community Engagement Research Coordinator will help to increase patient and community participation in statewide perinatal quality improvement efforts to help reduce disparities in maternal and neonatal outcomes. They will work with diverse patients, communities, and outpatient community-based perinatal health care professionals to create, implement, and evaluate perinatal quality improvement initiatives that improve birth equity in healthcare. The Community Engagement Research Coordinator is responsible for advancing connections to patient / family partners, community partners and community-based perinatal health care providers' engagement in health equity focused quality improvement initiatives for diverse and underrepresented community groups and patient populations and act as an advocate and liaison between these groups and the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative.
Project Description
ILPQC is a nationally recognized Perinatal Quality Collaborative (PQC) with over 90 participating hospitals. ILPQC facilitates state-wide quality improvement initiatives to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in birthing hospitals across the state by providing: opportunities for collaborative learning, rapid response data, and hospital team QI support. Current projects include Birth Equity, Promoting Vaginal Birth, Newborn Equity and Safe Sleep, and Mothers and Newborns affected by Opioids.
This position will serve as a Community Engagement Research Coordinator of the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC) focused on obstetric and neonatal quality improvement initiatives working collaboratively with the ILPQC team to engage patient, family, and community partners, and community-based perinatal health care providers to work on quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with IL birthing hospitals to improve outcomes and reduce disparities for birthing people and their newborns.
Responsibilities of this position fall into the following main areas:
  • Develop relationships with patient / family partners, community partners, and outpatient community-based perinatal healthcare providers
  • Serve as the primary contact with patient/ family and community partners and outpatient community-based perinatal health care providers to develop partnerships and coordinate ongoing collaboration and work
  • Support patient/family and community partnerships with ILPQC and support hospital teams developing patient / family partners community partners for ongoing input on quality improvement work
  • Support partnerships with outpatient community-based perinatal health care providers with ILPQC and hospital teams
  • Coordination of regular webinars, including obstetric and neonatal community advisory board meetings, statewide webinars to engage community and outpatient perinatal health care providers in statewide quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist in event planning for twice annual in-person collaborative learning opportunities including event planning and related communications including support of website/social media communication
  • Collaborate with patients, communities, and outpatient perinatal healthcare providers to ensure ILPQC data collection, analysis, and reporting is accessible and meaningful to them
  • Provide quality improvement support including individual calls, small group meetings, regional meetings, and other formats as identified
  • Participate in financial coordination including monitoring budgets, submitting expenses, processing invoices and related tasks
  • Assist with grant writing, monitoring grant timelines, and producing grant reports to funding organizations as well as abstracts and papers for publication.
  • Regular (1 - a few times per month) travel to hospital, community, and stakeholder locations throughout Illinois are required with potential for national travel for collaborative meetings..

Minimum Formal Education Required:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as public health, nursing, social work, social or health science or related; OR appropriate combination of education and Community Engagement experience or other relevant experience required
Preferred License and/or Certification:
Community health worker, Community Health Education Specialist, doula, health coach, patient advocate certification and/or equivalent (preferred)
Preferred Minimum Length and Nature of Experience:
At least one year participating in community-engaged projects or research (preferred)
Special Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Is comfortable engaging patients and community members in perinatal quality improvement.
  • Strong passion, leadership, and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with diverse and underrepresented community groups and patient populations.
  • Ability to effectively engage and motivate individuals and groups to participate in statewide quality improvement opportunities available to them.
  • Knowledge of local and statewide community health resources and experience interacting with healthcare systems (preferred).

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:
Must be able to manage printed literature and educational materials.
This role may be required to attend evening and weekend events, as needed.
Individual must have reliable transportation to attend local events and in-person meetings, as necessary.
Systems, Platforms, and Equipment Utilized within the Scope of the Position:
MS Office preferred (Outlook, Word, Excel), Zoom/Go-to-Meeting required.
Ability to work with applications such as REDCap (survey development and administration platform).
