Job description

Job Title: STEAMComputer Science Special Education Teacher

Position Summary:

Computer science and STEAM education are fundamental skills to understanding and participating in society that is valuable for every student to learn as part of a modern education.  The position will provide students in grades K-12 a course or courses that will give them a critical lens for interpreting the world around them by building their critical thinking, problem solving, computational thinking, and communication and collaboration skills.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.      Introduce students to a range of innovative practices and skills, including design thinking, application creation, introductory coding, robotics and related concepts.

2.      Integrate STEAM concepts into all areas of class content.

3.      Plan a program of study in Computer Science that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students assigned for instruction that is also consistent with PA Academic and voluntary standards.  Create a map and/or scope and sequence for class/classes that will be taught.

4.      Remain current with Computer Science and STEAM educational trends and effectively implement new strategies/hardware/software with students.

5.      Be an active participant in promoting the course to students, parents, and community members, which would include (but not limited to) publications, tours, and presentations.

6.      Utilize e-mail, Microsoft Office programs, and student informational systems (i.e. IEP Writer, Eschool) to manage communication, information and records.

7.      Follow all administrative policies and rules governing students.

8.      Work collaboratively with co-workers, including the proper management of support staff within the classroom.

9.      Collaborate and communicate with parents, education personnel and other service providers to implement Individual Education Plans (IEP) designed to increase student learning through specially designed instruction and accommodations for students' needs.

10.   Prepare progress reports, report cards and/or other state/district mandated paperwork/forms within established timelines.

11.   Establish expectations and rules for positive behavior and maintain a safe and secure learning environment for students.

12.   Maintain a professional demeanor at all times, following all AIU policies, building procedures and Pennsylvania professional code of conduct.

13.   Work collaboratively with co-workers; including the proper management of support staff within the classroom.

14.   Teacher would be responsible for supervising one building aide assigned to the classroom, as well as any other support staff who would be in the classroom with students.

15.   Must monitor and maintain all equipment/technology associated with student instruction, including STEAM equipment loaded to other classrooms.

16.   Must have a high level of autonomy and decision making skills.

17.   Other duties as assigned by the Building Administrator.

1.      Valid PA certification in Special Education required

2.      Must hold certificate from an approved Computer Science course (ex. Code.org, CMU CS Academy, etc.) with a minimum of 50 hours of professional development and/or Technology Education K-12 certification

3.      Requires demonstrated and direct experience using a wide range of instructional technology tools including (but not limited to) iPads, laptops, and Google Apps

4.      Requires demonstrated and direct experience and skills utilizing microcontrollers as well as experience teaching design thinking

5.      Strong working knowledge of Computer Science from introductory programming to advanced language-based coding

6.      Commitment to equity and access to Computer Science and STEAM education for students with disabilities with a high degree of cultural competency.

7.      Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with diverse learning profiles as well as a demonstrated record of an innovative, creative, and flexible teaching style.

8.      Proven ability to provide grade-level standards' based instruction with the ability to modify, accommodate, and provide specially designed instruction and modifications.

9.      Demonstrate strong working knowledge of Assistive Technologies.

10.   Ability to effectively present information and articulately respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, business and educational partners, and the general public.

11.   Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and an ability to work with limited supervision.

12.   Ability to comply with AIU Conduct policy.

Additional Requirements:

1.      Current Act 114, Act 34 and Act 151 required prior to an offer (Must be dated within 1 year of hire date).

2.      School Personnel Health Record (Form H511.340) must be completed and received by Human Resources prior to hire date.
