Summary
Joining the Secret Service, Office of Protective Operations (OPO),allows you to serve as a Lead Investigative Protection Officer. This position supports an integrated protective and investigative mission(s) which plans, directs, coordinates and implements domestic and international protective and investigative policies, programs and operations of the Secret Service.
Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime is additional compensation which may be paid up to 25% of the base salary.

Positions are available for qualified US Secret Service employees on a competitive appointment and are currently occupying the specified positions of Investigative Protection Officer, Lead Investigative Protection Officer, and Supervisory Investigative Protection Officer.

Duties
This Lead Investigative Protection Officer position starts at a base salary of $71,099 (GS-12, Step-1), with potential to base salary $92,429 (GS-12, Step-10).Locality adjustments will be set based on location determination.For more information on the Secret Service click here.
The selectee will serve as Lead Investigative Protection Officer in the Office of Protective Operations, George W. Bush Protective Division (GBD), Vice Presidential Protective Division (VPD) or Special Services Division (SSD). Typical work assignments include:
  • Assigning, overseeing, reviewing work assignments; ensuring organizational plans, missions, and vision are communicated and integrated in team objectives and work plans.
  • Provides instruction on specific-job techniques, scheduling formal training and advising employees on directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures the efficient, timely, and effective performance of work and monitoring/tracking assignments to assure assignments are within established guidelines.
  • Provides supervisor with feedback on team member performance and accomplishments; prepares and presents work-related information to supervisor.
  • Covers a designated security post implementing protective instructions and procedures.
  • Determines vulnerable areas and initiates physical security inspections to determine compliance with established requirements.
  • Performs duties concerned with the physical protection of personnel, facilities and assets.
  • Serves as functional expert providing oversight, technical, and procedural guidance and ensuring that proper protective and/or investigatory guidelines are followed.
  • Prepares reports and presentations to senior level management on protective service and investigative activities.
  • Prepares physical security reports outlining deficient areas.
  • Preparing detailed reports.

Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Possess a Top-Secret Clearance
  • Possess a current valid driver's license and maintain during employment.
  • Maintain a Top Secret Clearance during your career.
  • Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory.
  • Submit to random drug testing while you occupy the position.

  • This Lead Investigative Protection Officer position requires satisfactory completion of (or secure an appropriate waiver for):
    • The 12-week Uniformed Police Training Program (UPTP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC).
    • The 10-week Mixed Basic Training Course (MBTC) at the Agency's James J. Rowley Training Center (RTC).
  • If you are removed from training based on your inability to meet training standards, or if you voluntarily decide not to complete the training required for the Lead Investigative Protection Officer position, you will be returned to your previous position at the same grade and step you held before you accepted the Lead Investigative Protection Officer position. Please note that returning to your former position may result in a downgrade and/or a change to your salary.
  • The work may require long and irregular hours including holidays, weekends and evenings, shift work, considerable physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects, crouching and crawling under or in automobiles, self-protection in harm's way and defending internal and external stakeholders against a physical harm and/or attack(s).
  • The work performed in protective service may involve a high risk of exposure to potentially dangerous situations and hazardous environments impacting the lives of internal and external stakeholders and properties protected. The work is high-paced and constantly and rapidly changing which means adjusting and adapting to situations on short notice.

Qualifications
GS-12: To qualify for the grade GS-12 level you must possess one year of specialized experience at the grade GS-11 level performing duties such as: providing guidance and direction to team members; assigning and monitoring work performance; implementing protective instructions and procedures; planning logistics for protective services and transportation; covering a designated security post; preparing reports and presentations to senior level management on protective services and investigation activities and providing technical advice and guidance regarding protection and law enforcement operations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Time-in-Grade Requirement: Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service on a non-temporary appointment.Applicants must provide a copy of their SF-50 (Notification of Personnel Action), that should include their position, title, series, grade, step, tenure (1 or 2), and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). You may need to submit more than one SF-50 to comply.
