Job description

Summary
Joining the Secret Service, Office of Protective Operations (OPO), allows you to serve as a Supervisory Investigative Protection Officer. This position supports an integrated protective and investigative mission(s) which plans, directs, coordinates and implements domestic and international protective and investigative policies, programs and operations of the Secret Service.
Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime is additional compensation which may be paid up to 25% of the base salary.

Duties
This Supervisory Investigative Protection Officer position starts at a base salary of $84,546 (GS-13, step 1), with promotion potential to $109,908 (GS-13, step 10) base salary with adjustments determined by locality. For more information on the Secret Service click here.
The selectee(s) will serve as a Supervisory Investigative Protection Officer in the Office of Protective Operations (OPO) in one of the following Divisions: Presidential Protective Division (PPD); Vice Presidential Protective Division (VPD); Special Services Division (SSD); or the George W. Bush Protective Division (GBD). Typical work assignments include:
  • Directing employees engaged in protective, investigative, technical and administrative work; ensuring timeliness of work and that quality standards are met; and evaluating performance of subordinates.
  • Managing logistics and strategic planning in arranging protective services and transportation for internal and external law enforcement counterparts; ensuring implementation of appropriate protective instructions and procedures at security locations at official functions and that restricted areas are monitored and accessible to authorized personnel.
  • Conducting the full range of investigative law enforcement activities which involve the most sensitive and discrete handling of cases; providing oversight, technical and procedural guidance and interpreting statutory and regulatory guidelines; and ensuring that proper protective and investigatory guidelines are followed.
  • Maintaining knowledge of updated criminal intelligence developments and other investigative activities; and coordinating security requirements with internal and external law enforcement stakeholders.
  • Reviewing and preparing interim or final reports of investigations and crime prevention surveys detailing the results of investigative activity; and preparing reports identifying cause or causes and recommendations to prevent similar future occurrences.

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Possess a current valid driver's license and maintain during employment.
  • Maintain a Top Secret Clearance during your career.
  • Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory.
  • Submit to random drug testing while you occupy the position.
  • Must have a current qualifying medical exam on record.
  • Selectee(s) may be subject to a one-year supervisory probationary period.

If selected for this position, the following applies:
  • This Supervisory Investigative Protection Officer position requires satisfactory completion of (or secure an appropriate waiver for):
    • The 12-week Uniformed Police Training Program (UPTP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC).
    • The 10-week Mixed Basic Training Course (MBTC) at the Agency's James J. Rowley Training Center (RTC).
  • If you are removed from training based on your inability to meet training standards, or if you voluntarily decide not to complete the training required for the Supervisory Investigative Protection Officer position, you will be returned to your previous position at the same grade and step you held before you accepted the Supervisory Investigative Protection Officer position. Please note that returning to your former position may result in a downgrade and/or a change to your salary.
  • The work may require long and irregular hours including holidays, weekends and evenings, shift work, considerable physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects, crouching and crawling under or in automobiles, self-protection in harm's way and defending internal and external stakeholders against a physical harm and/or attack(s).
  • The work performed in protective service may involve a high risk of exposure to potentially dangerous situations and hazardous environments impacting the lives of internal and external stakeholders and properties protected. The work is high-paced and constantly and rapidly changing which means adjusting and adapting to situations on short notice.

Qualifications
GS-13: To qualify for the GS-13 level, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level performing duties such as:
  • leading/directing employees engaged in protective, investigative and administrative work;
  • managing logistics and strategic planning in arranging protective services and transportation for internal and external law enforcement counterparts; and,
  • preparing executive summaries and formal reports; and ensuring implementation of protective instructions and procedures at security locations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Time-in-Grade Requirement: Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service on a non-temporary appointment. Applicants must provide a copy of their SF-50 (Notification of Personnel Action), that should include their position, title, series, grade, step, tenure (1 or 2), and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). You may need to submit more than one SF-50 to comply.

  • Ability to supervise a program, which involves long and short-range planning in the areas of protective services, investigations, training, budget planning and execution, and management of assigned staff and other law enforcement functions.
