Job description

Raise The Barr is hiring an Emergency Grant Coordinators, in Greater Los Angeles or in Greater Minneapolis.

Raise The Barr is a 2Gen program led by a 2Gen team on a mission to maximize the potential of every individual.

Co-Founded by NFL linebacker Anthony Barr and his mother Lori Barr in 2016, Raise the Barr is committed to increasing the economic mobility for single-parent students in Minnesota and Southern California by providing them with the holistic resources they need to complete their education, including resources they need for their children to thrive. Promoting college success among student-parents is critical to improving racial, ethnic, and gender equity in higher education access.

Raise The Barr places single-parent students at the center of our work, and as such identifies every opportunity to elevate their voices in advocacy work and to advise the leadership team.

The Emergency Grant Coordinator works closely with single-parents enrolled in postsecondary schools who are experiencing an unexpected financial emergency that might be a barrier to continuing their education. Raise The Barr defines an emergency as a one-time unexpected expense for which our $1k or less Emergency Grant will help stabilize the family and allow the parent to continue school and/or employment. We differentiate an emergency from a crisis, the latter for which a $1k or less grant will likely not stabilize the family.

Job Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in once-a-month all-staff meetings and occasional programming calls.
  • Support RTB scholars and other single-parent students by connecting them to various resources, including mental health, housing, emergency assistance, internships, employment, scholarships, childcare, etc.
  • Collect data through the database system to ensure accurate and comprehensive information on scholar case notes.
  • Serve as liaison between RTB Emergency Grant applicants and RTB team.
  • Conduct on-going follow up with RTB EG applicants after emergency funds and/or resources were provided to assess progress and determine if they require additional support
  • Ensure daily and effective communication with applicants and with internal RTB staff.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.

Job Skills & Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated history of working with marginalized communities
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and trauma-informed approaches
  • Strong knowledge and existing relationships with organizations that provide service to and intersect with single-parent students and their children (housing, food pantries, academic support, mental health support, etc.)
  • Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, communication, and time-management skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work remotely
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and follow-up skills
  • Availability for occasional nonconventional work hours during the evening and weekends to meet with single-parent students

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and our employees are people with different strengths, experiences and backgrounds, who share a passion for equitable access to post-secondary education and whole-family wellness. Diversity not only includes race and gender identity, but also age, disability status, veteran status, sexual orientation, religion and many other parts of one’s identity. All of our employee’s points of view are key to our success, and inclusion is everyone's responsibility. All employees are expected to:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias
  • Support the leadership team in ensuring equitable experiences, strengthening inclusion acumen, and promoting a culture of inclusivity and belonging that embraces the contributions of all team members
