POSITION SUMMARY:
The Human Resources Business Partner plays a key role in moving both processes and people forward. At the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, it is important that our People & Culture Team has the skills and abilities to effectively impact change and build a culture that is reflective of our association vision and values. It is our goal to achieve the following in partnership with key stakeholders:

  • We are strategic Business Partners involved in the success of the association.
  • We align business objectives with employees and leadership.
  • We serve as a consultant to leadership on Human Resources related issues.
  • We serve as the team member's champion.
  • We lead people and culture and employee relations with assistance from legal resources and senior leaders.
  • We build partnerships across the YMCA and HR function to deliver value-added services to our team members.

This position can be based out of Suffolk, VA or Currituck, NC.
DIVISION OF DUTIES:
  • 50% - Employee Relations and Engagement, Leadership Development (Manager Development), Performance Management/Progressive Discipline
  • 30% - Supporting Recruiting through Requisition Management, Interview Process, Offer, and Post-Offer Employment Screening and Pre-boarding and Y University orientation
  • 15% - Strategic Partnerships & Projects & Activities, Off-boarding
  • 5% - HR Liaison Support for the HR Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIORITIES:
The Human Resources Business Partner serves as a direct Human Resources Business Partner to the Division Vice President (DVP) for their assigned division. They will partner regularly with the Division Vice President as a strategic HR Business Partner helping to drive People & Culture initiatives; support recruitment success; and ensure positive employee relations and culture building across their division through leadership and team member development. HR Business Partners play a key role in helping to identify and develop the future leaders of our organization through recruitment and retention. The People & Culture Human Resources Business Partner will serve as the key point of contact for team members and leaders for all human capital related items. Some of the objectives will include:
  1. Serves as the People & Culture Human Resources Business Partner for their Division Vice President. Partners with DVP to achieve the following:
    1. Improve localized hiring and the onboarding experience for full-time and part-time team members
    2. Improve and drive positive employee relations at the division and regional level
    3. Assist with handbook interpretation
    4. Timely completion and follow-up to team member investigations
    5. Lead and provide guidance related to performance management
  2. Collaborates with the Talent Acquisition Director in the hiring experience. Partners with hiring managers through the recruitment process, serving as an advocate of the candidate experience. Supports center-level recruiting activities and initiatives. Assists recruiting efforts by carrying out various tasks and processes, including but not limited to the following:
  • Submits Criminal Record and Reference Checks
  • Prepares, proofs and posts job requisitions for posting on job board
  • Responds to reference checks and verification of employment requests
  • Maintenance and upkeep of employee files and Dayforce records
  • Assists with Y University training to for new hires and audits compliance
  1. Performs a wide range of duties relative to the maintenance and processing of personnel records and reports
  2. Assists with Leadership Development and works with the People & Culture Leadership team in collaboration and coordination of onboarding and training initiatives.
  1. Supports and assists in the implementation of Culture and Engagement Initiatives, to include periodic engagement and pulse survey communications
  2. Maintains professionalism and confidentiality with all employment related information
  3. Assists with various research projects and/or special projects
  4. Performs general HR administrative support and assistance to the Vice President of People & Culture as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 3+ years of experience in Human Resources or employee relations.
  • 4-year college degree preferred in Human Resources, labor/employee relations, organizational/leadership development or related field.
  • PHR or Management & Employee Relations professional designation/certifications preferred.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal and state regulations, both adopted and pending, affecting Human Resources compliance.
  • Proficiency with employee relations, progressive performance management, investigations, and EEO.
  • Exhibits a positive attitude with a demonstrated ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds and promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  • Possess a high level of confidentiality and a strong commitment to the YMCA philosophy and values.

  • Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions
  • Will be in contact with all levels of staff, board members, guests, vendors, business associates, applicants, and visitors
  • Must be able to work beyond normal working hours in order to serve the needs of internal customers, weekends and holidays as needed for early morning meetings, extended weekday meetings/trainings or weekend trainings/meetings

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • May be required to walk, stand, kneel and stoop
  • Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Must be able to perform the duties of direct reports

ACCOUNTABILITY:
Accountable for completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause-driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties.
