The City of Indianola invites applicants for the position of Director of Finance. The City welcomes professionals who have a passion to accomplish administrative and financial activities.
The City of Indianola (pop.15,833) is a growing community with a historic downtown, located approximately 15 minutes south of Des Moines. It is a safe community with Midwestern values, friendly people, and excellent schools. Indianola, which is home to Simpson College, the world-renowned Des Moines Metro Opera and the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame, is known for its excellent access to outdoor activities, a nice trail system, five major parks and two golf courses. The community welcomes thousands of visitors annually who come to Indianola to enjoy major events such as the National Balloon Classic, the Warren County Fair, and other events.
This key-leader professional directs and evaluates the overall financial activities of the City including budgeting, cash management and investing, accounting, auditing, and financial reporting, while maintaining standards of excellence necessary to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Integral to the position of Director of Finance is the responsibility for supervising departmental operations and ensuring that personnel and equipment are utilized efficiently. The Director of Finance will supervise the work of departmental employees while providing training, motivation, evaluations, and discipline to Finance Department Staff.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare the City budget in cooperation with City Manager, City Clerk and department heads for the Council's study and approval
- Prepare financial planning and analysis documents, review and monitor the rate structure for all City funds
- Oversee the effective accomplishment of duties performed by the Finance Department and ensure employees comply with the City policies and procedures
- Oversee development and coordination of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and serve on CIP team
- Prepare and issue official statements for the issuance of all debt and provide sufficient documentation to meet annual disclosure requirements for outstanding debt
Minimum requirements include:
- Bachelor's Degree in finance, accounting, public administration, or related field required, Master's Degree in finance, accounting, public administration or CPA, or related field preferred
- Four to six years of general or financial management experience required

Scored Grade 9: $108,150.00 - $146,120.58; anticipated starting salary $108,150.00 to midpoint $125,727.31 depending on qualifications. The position also comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes vacation, sick leave, personal leave, life insurance and AD&D, short and long-term disability, health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement, tuition reimbursement, and an employee assistance program.
