Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to manage the day-to-day operations of the Agricultural & Natural Resources (ANR) program unit. The work of this position ranges from standardized office support assignments to performance of administrative duties involving independent decision-making and judgment. Public contact is a major component, both internal and external to the organization and the University. This position coordinates business functions of the organization that include tracking and monitoring budget allocations, travel planning and reimbursements, database management, meeting and event planning, answering phones and directing callers as needed, mail processing, etc.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The basic mission of the Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T State University and NC State University is to extend the application of research-generated knowledge of a coordinated Cooperative Extension system in North Carolina and to bridge existing gaps so that all farmers, homemakers, families, youth and communities might acquire the practical knowledge and life skills needed to improve the quality of their lives. Educational assistance is offered in four broad areas: agriculture and natural resources, home economics, 4-H and youth development, and community and rural development. Extension specialist on campus provide training and technical assistance to Extension agents and paraprofessionals working in the counties. These county personnel work one-on one with the families and individuals in the various programs. Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T provides educational programs for limited-resource families and individuals in about one-third of North Carolina counties.
The Agriculture and Natural Resources programs of Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T help farmers to diversify their traditional farms and begin new enterprises, offering new and innovative ways to grow food. The primary audiences are those farmers who are just beginning, those who are under-served, and those with small-scale acreage. Agricultural and Natural Resources staff conduct field days, tours, meetings and conferences, to deliver the latest information on farming practices and technologies, agricultural business management, natural resource conversation, food safety and gardening. They also develop and deliver programs in community-based and local food systems.

8 am - 5 pm M-F

  • Proficiency with computers, software and departmental databases is necessary.
  • Excel is used extensively.
  • This position summarizes evaluation data and searches and retrieves data from the Extension Reporting System (ERS), One Stop Shop, and federal data bases for use in reporting processes.
  • Transfer event registration forms into Qualtrics software for event registration.

  • Answers questions pertaining to ANR programs and events.
  • Responds to customers’ needs such as providing instructions for packing and mailing publications, formatting curriculums, creating displays and other resources to county staff and other partner agencies statewide.

  • Establishes and maintains effective and positive working relationships with agency personnel, officials, and the general public.
  • Communicate with candidates to arrange Search Committee Interviews and travel.

  • This position requires excellent organizational and time management skills including the ability to handle multiple responsibilities. The ability to establish priorities and exercise sound independent judgment and discretion is essential.

  • Manages extensive mailing lists, material request lists and sorts information for use in program or project management and for processes like mail merge and targeted mailings.
  • Assists with travel and purchasing processes and forms.
