Under general supervision, conduct initial interviews for new and previous clients that have been placed into the custody of the Lake County Jail, assist attorneys with Spanish interpretation as needed, and provide backup coverage for other administrative support staff positions. Personal judgment and independent action may be necessary in communicating information about clients to the assigned attorneys within the Public Defender's Office.
- Receive and organize paperwork for newly and previously appointed clients that are located within the Lake County Jail.
- Visit all newly housed clients in the Lake County Jail and conduct initial interviews to collect background information, preliminary statements about the charges, etc.
- Organize information gathered and deliver it to the assigned attorney within the office in a timely manner.
- Assist in interpreting contact room visits at the jail, visits in the office, phone calls, and documents.
- Deliver, pick up, and distribute mail to and from inmates within the Lake County Jail daily.
- Provide coverage for other support staff positions as necessary.
- Assist in the training of interns when necessary.
- Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.-Must be able to manage projects and multiple priorities/deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and uphold the ethical standards of the legal profession.
- Ability to prioritize work and maintain workflow in a hectic environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally, in both English and Spanish.
- Working knowledge of legal terms and the ability to translate them to and from English to Spanish.
- Working knowledge of the court system in Lake County, and legal documents within said system.
- Ability to make minor independent decisions based on local statutes and office procedures.
- Ability to identify questions that should be answered by an attorney or supervisor.
- Ability to work with the general public, as well as clients, in highly charged and emotional situations.
- Build and maintain professional working relationships within the Public Defender's office, as well as other offices within the County.
Education and/or Other Requirements:
- Completion of a standard high school program or equivalent
- Bilingual Required
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to file documents for extended periods of time if needed.
- Ability to return files to shelves that are close to the ground or above eye-level.Employment Type: Full-Time
