Prince George's County Police Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill a current Administrative Assistant 4G, grade G27, vacancy within the 21st Century Policing Division.
About the Position:
This is the highest level of professional, administrative, and supervisory staff work, primarily responsible for handling the most complex administrative assignments. Incumbents in this class provide high-level non-routine administrative assistance to a mid-level manager or a department head. Incumbents exercise supervisory duties and responsibilities over a section/division usually comprised of professional, para professional, and clerical support personnel.
Responsibilities frequently include acting as departmental liaison with central agencies to address and resolve key management and administrative problems. An employee in this position exercises extensive independence subject to established departmental policy. General supervision is received from an administrative supervisor through satisfactory completion of the assignment task as revealed by conferences and reports.
Accountability Statement:
The incumbent must meet and maintain the training standards set forth by the Prince George's County Police Department.
The incumbent shall not disseminate information, administrative or operational unless expressly authorized. Information may not be discussed with other County employees (including individuals in the Police Department), except for work-related reasons, under terms and conditions of the Maryland Public Information Act.
The incumbent in this position will be required to sign a confidentiality and/or non-disclosure agreement.
The incumbent in this position is deemed "essential personnel" and is subject to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate.
Examples of Work
What You'll Do:
  • Exercises the full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities over subordinate level employees including ensuring employees' work product is completed according to established guidelines and adhering to General Orders and the 21st Century Policing's Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Counsels management in developing and maintaining sound organizational structures, improving management methods and procedures; sees to the objective use of personnel, money, and material; collaborates with Personnel, Budget, Finance, and other departments in finding solutions that arise in the management of an organization.
  • Plans and coordinates activities about the administration of 21st Century Policing projects and assignments
  • Performs a variety of complex administrative and professional work in planning, coordinating, and managing the implementation, maintenance, and adherence to the police department's accreditation through CALEA.
  • Coordinates all events associated with an on-site assessment including contract issues, public hearings, transportation, etc.
  • Reviews analyzes, and reports on a wide variety of complex technical issues concerning law enforcement standards and the accreditation process, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and standards of work for the Police Department.
  • Works with a representative of the Office of Law in developing enforcement cases relative to contract fulfillment, code enforcement, or other County service program operations; searches Federal, State, and local codes and ordinances for provisions applicable to the program to which assigned, and records such provisions in format useful to the department's operating personnel.
  • Provides cost projections to be incorporated in the yearly fiscal budget submission.
  • Ensures bi-weekly payroll is completed for subordinate staff by the established due date.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

Qualifications
What You'll Need:
  • Graduation from college with major course work in liberal arts, one of the social sciences, or public or business administration; plus
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in government or business.
  • At least one (1) year of this experience should have involved the supervision of a high-level administrative staff; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience researching, drafting, writing, and implementing policy and procedure.
  • Ability to effectively carry out special and general assignments promptly, requiring organization of material and development of procedures without direct supervision.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Database applications able to use and create documents using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to learn and use other software as directed.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. Ability to analyze and solve problems quickly
  • Knowledge and experience using PowerDMS software.

Additional Information
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate must:
  1. Must successfully pass a background investigation.
    2. Must pass a drug screening.
    3. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
    4. Must be willing to adjust work schedule to include working Saturdays and Sundays
    when required. Some position assignments will require shift work.
    5. This is an essential position. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.

General Plan Information:
The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.
A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.
Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.
The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).
New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.
The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.
After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
