The Discovery Process Research (DPR) group of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is recruiting a student for a summer internship, to be based in San Diego, CA. Are you interested in a hands-on experience to learn about the role of Organic Chemistry in the drug discovery process?
The DPR summer intern will contribute through development of new synthetic methods with an opportunity to present and publish their work. They will also learn the functional role of scientists in the pharmaceutical industry and receive valuable career advice from mentors while building a network of professional contacts and developing the skills needed to advance their careers.

THE SYNTHETIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY INTERN WILL:
- Work collaboratively with a senior scientist
- Develop the scope for novel synthetic methodologies
- Synthesize, purify, and characterize relevant small molecule organic compounds
- Participate in ongoing project team meetings
- Be exposed to other drug discovery functions
- Be based in San Diego, CA
Note: The anticipated base pay for this position is Sophomore $24.00/hr, Junior $25.00/hr, Senior $27.00/hr, Master's degree $32.00hr.
Qualifications
- Current enrollment in an accredited college/university pursuing a B.S. degree in a field related to the chemical sciences
- Completion of at least one year of Organic Chemistry course and lab work
- Familiarity with standard analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC)
- Prior research experience (outside of the standard curriculum) prefered
- Availability to work full-time during the internship period
- Legal authorization to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H1-B status) now or in the future
- Strong organizational skills, rigor, and proven track record to balance multiple tasks
- Capacity to work independently as well as on a team
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Power Point, and have strong oral and written communication skills
- A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 is strongly preferred
