Department Summary
The Synthetic Molecule Process Chemistry Department is in charge of developing phase appropriate chemical processes to deliver and support Genentech's rapidly evolving and diverse pipeline. We are a highly innovative and academic department that never shy away from implementing the state-of-the-art chemical reactions in our processes. The chemical processes we develop here will not only impact patients' lives but the broader chemical synthesis community as a whole. We invite chemists who share these values to join our department.
Key Responsibilities
- Synthetic organic experiments to identify, isolate and purify organic compounds
- Design and evaluate control experiments to aid reaction optimization
- Thorough recording of experimental details using electronic notebook software
- Collection of characterization data for starting materials, intermediates and products
- Adherence to all of Genentech's guidelines and rules, including safety practices
- Contribution to forthcoming publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Communication of research results in periodic written and oral presentations
Program Highlights
- Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
- Program start dates are in May and June 2023.
- A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
- Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

- Final presentations of project work to senior leaders.
- Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.

Who You Are
Required Education: Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree. Undergraduates who have completed at least 2-3 years of undergraduate coursework (juniors and seniors) at a university, including sophomore organic chemistry (lecture + lab).
Required Majors: Chemistry or organic chemistry, or related fields.
Preferred Qualification:
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

- Knowledge of compound identification by NMR and mass spectrometry;
- Purification and isolation techniques, such as HPLC and silica gel column chromatography;
- Familiar with proper handling techniques for moisture and air-sensitive chemicals.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $26.00 - $33.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
