The Chemistry Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) team at Promega is committed to ensuring the safety of our employees throughout their research, development, and manufacturing activities. YOUR ROLE:
As an EHS Intern, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with seasoned EHS and Process Safety professionals to foster safe chemistry lab and manufacturing practices and processes. This role offers a rich learning environment where you will receive hands-on training on process safety techniques and critical safety practices in an industrial setting.
JOB OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Team’s safety programs. This position will help to ensure a safe and healthy workplace, which includes performing process safety testing to help understand and minimize chemical reaction and operational risks.
*This is an ongoing part-time position (16-20 hours per week). The manager's preference is to have the intern onsite for one 6-8 hour day per week. The rest of the weekly hours are flexible based on the individual's availability.
Estimated starting salary range is $21.00 - $23.00/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
The full salary range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hour.
CORE DUTIES:
1. Through training and following established procedures, will execute laboratory safety testing of chemicals and reaction mixtures using process safety instrumentation such as DSC, TSu, and EasyMax, to identify potential heat generation, gas evolution, hazardous chemical reactivity, chemical incompatibilities, and thermal decomposition.
2. Perform basic process safety instrument maintenance and troubleshooting in partnership with Process Safety staff and instrument vendors.
3. With guidance from senior laboratory staff, performs all laboratory assignments in accordance with established safety procedures. Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment.
4. Performs facility inspections including eyewash/showers, fire extinguishers, and laboratory fume hoods per OSHA requirements.
5. Assists with Safety Data Sheet management program.
6. Supports restock of first aid, PPE, and other safety supplies.
7. Supports chemical inventory management processes including chemical database maintenance, lab pack (hazardous waste) inventory,
8. Assists with documentation for EHS programs to ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and company requirements.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Pursuing BS degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or EHS-related field.
2. Experience working with hazardous chemicals. At least one organic chemistry course and experience working in a laboratory environment.
3. Willingness and ability to work with mechanical aspects of process safety instrumentation and processing equipment in the lab.
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively by being approachable, thoughtful, and diplomatic.
5. Ability to collaborate with others and enjoys teamwork.
6. Strong computer skills, including intermediate level knowledge of MS Office programs.
7. Strong work ethic, reliable, responsible and self-directed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Process Safety or Analytical Chemistry experience.
2. Experience on a safety committee or safety related team.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Ability to move about the building, ascend stairs, use ladders, position oneself in low positions, transport items between buildings, and remain stationary for moderate periods of time.
2. Ability to move objects up to 20 lbs.
3. Ability to use a computer/Microsoft Office applications
