We are excited to offer an 8-10 week paid summer internship in the Medicinal Chemistry group to a highly motivated student studying synthetic organic chemistry or a closely related field. We are proud to bring enthusiastic students into our teams, to provide them with an opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects, while building a foundation for their future career. This position provides the opportunity to obtain hands-on biotechnology experience while contributing in the laboratory to design and synthesis of compounds that will be evaluated in biological assays for cancer. The ideal applicant will have a passion for organic chemistry and an interest in learning how it applies to the field of Medicinal Chemistry for the discovery of new therapeutics for cancer.
Responsibilities
- The intern will have the opportunity to synthesize, purify, and characterize novel biologically-active molecules
- Propose multi-step synthetic sequences and generate intermediates and target compounds
- Operate laboratory equipment, utilizing appropriate methods for performing experiments
- Purify products via column chromatography or reverse-phase HPLC
- Acquire and interpret analytical data (e.g. HPLC, LCMS and NMR)
- Learn to use literature and protocol searching tools (e.g. SciFinder)
- Opportunity to gain hand-on experience with molecular modeling and data visualization software tools
- Contribute to exploratory research projects and collaborate with other members of the group
- Keep excellent records of experimental procedures and acquired data in an electronic notebook
- Attend relevant project meetings and present your work in chemistry meetings
Qualifications
- Major in Chemistry, Chemical Biology or related field (we will consider undergraduate or graduate students with relevant experience)
- Previous hands-on laboratory experience in synthetic organic chemistry is strongly preferred
- Experienced in obtaining and analyzing relevant analytical data, such as NMR, LCMS or HPLC
- Organized, detail-oriented, creative thinker, self-motivated with a strong desire to learn
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
