Department Summary
Synthetic Molecule Analytical Chemistry (SMAC) is at the forefront of the analytical characterization of all potential synthetic drug molecules in the Genentech pipeline. Utilizing advanced analytical characterization techniques (mass spectrometry, chromatography, spectroscopy, etc.), SMAC scientists are responsible for the separation, characterization, and validation of challenging biopharmaceutical molecules and their associated process-related impurities.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate the utility of ion mobility in the Synthetic Molecule Analytical Chemistry drug discovery pipeline
- Learn the intricacies of Genentech advanced hyphenated technologies, including liquid chromatography, ion mobility, and tandem mass spectrometry
- Detect, characterize, and structurally elucidate chromatographically inseparable isobars
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and communicate results internally with seminars and poster presentations
Program Highlights
- Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship
- Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
- A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship

Who You Are (Required)
Required education:
You meet one of the following criteria:
- Must be pursuing a Master's Degree
- Must be pursuing a PhD
Required majors:
- Chemistry (Analytical, Physical), Biochemistry
Required skills:
- Hands-on experience in liquid chromatography mass spectrometry experimentation
- Demonstrated data analysis and scientific communication
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of ion mobility principles, experimental parameters, and their applications
- Willingness to lead writing efforts for scientific publications
- Desire to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team/department
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is$50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
