Job description

About NYLAG:
Founded in 1990, NYLAG is a leading civil legal services organization combating economic, racial, and social injustice by advocating for people experiencing poverty or in crisis. Our services include comprehensive, free civil legal services, financial empowerment, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community partnerships. NYLAG exists because wealth should not determine who has access to justice. We aim to disrupt systemic racism by serving individuals and families whose legal and financial crises are often rooted in racial inequality. NYLAG goes to where the need is, providing services in more than 150 community sites (e.g. courts, hospitals, libraries) and on our Mobile Legal Help Center. During COVID-19, most of our services were virtual to keep our community safe. NYLAG’s staff of 370 impacted the lives of nearly 129,000 people last year.
About LegalHealth
LegalHealth, a division of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), partners with medical professionals in 38 hospitals in New York City to address the non-medical needs of low-income people with serious health problems. LegalHealth complements health care with legal care – providing free legal services in medical facilities and training healthcare professionals to understand the legal issues their patients may encounter.
Job description
In December 2022, LegalHealth launched Project Assist: Legal Support for Family Caregivers with the goal of providing legal services to family caregivers of older adults and adults with disabilities by partnering with outpatient community organizations. Many family caregivers need legal services in two general areas: 1) legal decision making regarding financial and health matters on behalf of those with diminished or absent capacity; and b) to increase household financial and housing stability by obtaining public benefits or navigating housing rights. The attorney will handle a variety of legal issues and will have the opportunity to continue developing this project in partnership with community organizations and funding partners.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct outreach to outpatient/community organizations that provide family care giver support and develop case referral systems.
  • Provide legal services in a wide range of legal issues including advance planning, guardianship, public benefits, and housing.
  • Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations and funding partners to sustain and expand this project.
  • Develop and maintain city-wide caregiver support legal helpline.
  • Develop and train partner organizations on our subject matter expertise and program to foster better communication and stronger relationships.

Qualifications
  • Admitted to practice law in New York.
  • Knowledge of Article 81 and Article 17A Guardianship, advance planning, and public benefits.
  • At least two years of prior and relevant experience, preferably working in healthcare or with vulnerable populations.
  • Experience with program development and networking.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Ability to both empathize with clients’ challenges and help to problem-solve is critically important.

NYLAG’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
NYLAG is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. People of color, women, people with disabilities, immigrants, veterans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people, and those with lived experiences in the communities we serve are strongly encouraged to apply.
