This is a hybrid position which will require the candidate to report to, and work from the corporate office on a bi-monthly basis, or more frequently, such as in the event of a department-wide meeting and depending on business necessity. Therefore, interested candidates should be within a 2-hour commute to Temple, TX.
This senior level attorney is responsible for to provide day-to-day strategic and legal support to McLane's management team. Specific functions supported by this role will include freight transportation and logistics, redistribution, food safety/QA and litigation. This position ensures McLane's operations are following legal requirements. This position will report to McLane's Senior Vice President and General Counsel.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Handle complex legal matters, analyze legal issues in the context of the business, and be the lead legal point of contact for McLane's freight and redistribution business units (Vantix and KINEXO) and related freight management activities, its food safety/QA compliance functions, e-Discovery, and other assigned areas and projects from time to time.
- Provide high quality, timely and cost-effective legal services that help the company maximize opportunities and mitigate risk.
- Draft, review, revise, and negotiate legal agreements, including but not limited to, freight carriage agreements, broker agreements, 3PL agreements, courier agreements, and other arrangements arising out of the company's freight and transportation logistics activities.
- Manage disputes arising out of inbound freight, redistribution, and logistics functions, including freight claims; effectively manage outside counsel and legal spend on litigation.
- Maintain expertise and monitor developments in federal and state regulations and laws relating to freight transportation and brokerage, food safety, and e-Discovery and advise internal teams accordingly.
- Work with business units to obtain feedback, understand internal needs and requirements and incorporate them into agreements.
- Build relationships with business partners with diplomacy and by providing insightful, timely, pragmatic, and proactive counsel with limited supervision.
- Effectively manage outside counsel and legal spend.
- Serve as Legal Department's project- and subject-matter lead on e-Discovery initiatives.
- Coordinate company's responses to third-party subpoenas in various subject matters.
- Keep informed regarding industry trends and best practices and counsel business partners on measures to avoid, reduce and mitigate risks.
- Identify opportunities for internal process improvements and implement them.
- Provide counsel and work as a team with other attorneys in the department.
- Determine whether to send matters to outside counsel and oversee outside counsel, as necessary.
- Assist in all aspects of the business for which the Legal Department has responsibility.
- Accept and manage other matters as assigned by the General Counsel or the attorney's direct manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
- Admission in good standing to a state bar, preferably Texas
- Seven or more years of applicable legal experience. Law firm experience required; additional in-house and transactional experience preferred. Emphasis on transportation and freight law preferred.
- Excellent analytical, oral, and written communication skills, and attention to detail
- Ability to be flexible and quickly adapt to changing direction, manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to direct and manage a team and counsel them through a variety of legal issues.
- Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
- Ability to self-manage and work independently to assess and resolve complex legal issues.
- Ability to research and synthesize complex legal concepts and explain them simply and concisely to various levels of management.
- A strong interest in working with internal business partners and desire to expand your practice as you learn and grow in the role.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Hybrid opportunity (three days remote, two days onsite in Temple, Texas Home Office)
- Some travel, less than 10%, will be required.
