Position Summary:

A Mentor is responsible for the supervision of students, promoting and actively participating in all After School activities, providing a safe and fun learning environment, and serving as a positive role model for students. Mentors work up to 26 consecutive weeks from mid-October to mid-April.

Program Dates, Times & Locations:

October 2023 - April 2024

  • The Program operates at Mastery Smedley Elementary School.
  • Mentor hours are between 3:00-5:00 Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Priority to candidates available all 3 days.
  • Mentors are required to commit to at least two afternoons per week.

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum of eighteen (18) years of age
  • Must be a High School graduate pursing a college degree
  • Enrolled in or successfully completed an education-related or child-related major/course of study preferred

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise a group of 5+ students focusing on behavior and group management, safety, security, and personal/skill development
  • Work effectively with co-mentors and collaborate on daily responsibilities
  • Facilitate and actively participate in all student activities including but not limited to: homework, tutoring, academic skills development, character building, arts enrichment, Intro to music classes, and group projects
  • Complete assigned paperwork
  • Serve as a positive role model to students
  • Exhibit ESF Core Values at all times and adhere to all company policies
  • Have fun
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Experience Requirements:

  • Prior experience working with children in a group setting, examples include but are not limited to; teaching, coaching, babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant, etc.
  • Previous experience working with urban youth

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports directly to and takes direction from the Program Director and Program Coordinator.

Essential Job Functions - Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds across campus
  • Work upright and mobile for two (2) to four (4) hours per day
  • Respond to emergency situations which may include running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and ascending stairs without undue exertion
  • Possess physical capacity to fulfill all essential job functions - responsibilities listed above
