We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Analyst in Rancho Bernardo, CA. The ideal candidate would be an expert in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and have practical real-world experience, be able to with limited direction, exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives for the review, research, design, development, and/or solution to advanced technical engineering problem (s).
This individual may also function in an advisory or project leadership role providing direction to less experienced professional staff. They will formulate plans, typically long term, for solution(s) development, documentation, and deployment, as well as meet various compliance, reporting, and safety standards.
The role evaluates the integration of the engineering solution within the overall engineering environment; and ensures that appropriate documentation, testing, maintenance, and engineering updates are completed. In addition, they will communicate with engineering professionals, users, and management throughout the solution development cycle, representing the company as a prime technical contact on contracts and/or projects, interacting with senior external personnel on technical matters requiring coordination between the organizations, and participating in the development of new business or the expansion of existing business.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides practical solutions and insight to problems involving computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Performs calculations related to air/fluid flow in and around lasers, advanced sensors, nuclear and nuclear thermal propulsion, electric motors, generators, battery systems and orbital satellites. Can evaluate heat transfer, lift, and drag on moving bodies in various mediums.
- Addresses fluid flow and thermal issues utilizing engineering and scientific principles. Can adjust solution detail depending on cost and schedule constraints from hand calculations to detailed simulations.
- Generation of computational meshes and performing CFD analyses using standard commercial and/or governmental mesh generators and CFD codes. The latter includes monitoring convergence of both steady state and transient simulations.
- Implement physics models into the CFD tools to expand their capabilities.
- Mentor less experienced engineers and provide technical consultation on CFD matters
- Documents findings and communicates reports and technical presentations at engineering meetings and participates in program reviews.
- May assume technical and engineering responsibility for segments or key portions of contracts.
- Provide technical communication within the Company management and may represent the Company as a technical contact to customers.
