Job description

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity's industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth - where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.

Your journey with us is more than just a job - it's an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.

About theTeam:

The Structures team at Relativity is responsible for the design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing our launch vehicle integrated structures, as well as flight mechanisms. As a part of this team, you will be given hardware ownership for the full product lifecycle, and get the opportunity to conveniently validate your hardware through testing at our factory of the future, headquartered in Long Beach, CA. Unique to Relativity, you will get to work across many teams to leverage Relativity's first-of-its-kind 3D printing technology to develop world-class integrated launch vehicles. Overall, this team is critical to the launch success of Terran 1 & Terran R, among many other firsts!

About the Role:
In your role as a Mechanisms Development Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to optimize development and streamline the transition from design to production, of key Terran-R components such as Grid Fins, Thrust-Vector Actuators, and Landing Legs. You will:
Work with design engineers to optimize the hardware and system they operate in for delivery.
Optimize manufacturing schedules and processes for efficient production.
Identify and resolve technical and logistical challenges in the build phase.
Collaborate closely with teams such as Design Engineering, Manufacturing, GNC, Avionics, and Fluids to ensure a seamless transition from design to build and remove roadblocks.
Source reliable vendors and utilize internal resources effectively for the manufacture of flight hardware.
Drive development testing and iterative design principles of mechanism flight hardware.
Implement quality control measures and oversee testing to ensure the fidelity of final products.

Your mission will be to ensure the timely, cost-effective build of both development and production space flight mechanisms which is vital to rapid vehicle launch and re-use. Your ability to navigate ambiguity, lead projects independently, and collaborate effectively will be key to your success.

About You:
BS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field & 5-8+ years of industry experience.
Experience with CAD and CAM software, such as NX or SolidWorks. Proven experience in manufacturing, assembly, and testing of complex mechanical systems.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including 3D printing, CNC machining, electrical hardware, and assembly techniques.
Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication skills, capable of working cross-functionally and conveying complex ideas to diverse teams.

Nice to have but not required:
Experience in the aerospace industry, particularly with launch vehicles.
Advanced degree in a related engineering field.

Your proven track record in a high-ambiguity environment and your practical knowledge of mechanical engineering principles will be crucial in overcoming complex build challenges. You should demonstrate:

8+ years of experience in Manufacturing Engineering, preferably in aerospace.
Fundamental understanding of engineering principles for pneumatic, hydraulic, and electromechanical mechanism design.
A deep understanding of manufacturing processes, material properties, and quality control methods.
Experience evaluating machine shops and other vendors.
Hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing techniques and a willingness to innovate in this space, including the ability to assist in rapid iterative development.
Proficiency in engineering software tools and project management software.

Relativity Space offers competitive salary and equity, a generous vacation policy, an annual L&D stipend and more!
