POSITION SUMMARY:
The highly motivated Scientist will develop and implement advanced MALDI imaging technologies to address important questions in the fields of biology, chemistry, and clinical medicine. This role involves collaborating with a team dedicated to the discovery and validation of biomarkers in diverse disease areas, including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drive research in qualitative and quantitative MALDI imaging analysis of small molecules (lipids & metabolites), as well as targeted proteins using antibody-based technologies.
- Provide robust proof-of-principle and mechanism-of-action imaging data to support internal drug development and/or diagnostic pipelines.
- Mentor research associates and collaborate closely with analytical biochemistry, molecular biology, and computational research staff to design, plan, and perform experiments, collect data, and conduct data analysis.
- Communicate findings to a team of chemists, biologists and/or clinicians.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or a related field with hands-on experience preparing samples for MALDI imaging and operating state-of-the-art HRAM mass spectrometers. Relevant postdoctoral experience preferred.
- Ability to develop, optimize, and validate MALDI-based methods (tissue imaging and high-throughput screening on MALDI target plates), including the evaluation of ionization matrices and optimization of mass spectrometric data acquisition strategies.
- A strong background in small molecule analysis and ion mobility-MS, and some experience in organic chemistry, cell biology, signaling, and/or systems biology.
- Familiarity with sample preparation (liquid-liquid extraction and SPE) and global analysis of lipids and metabolites by UHPLC-MS/MS, including nontargeted (qualitative/semi-quantitative) and targeted (quantitative) analyses, on high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometers and triple-quadrupole mass spectrometers.
- Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, and computational scientists to deeply characterize and understand the metabolomes, lipidomes and proteomes of cells, biofluids, and tissues.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, and present data in a clear fashion.
- Solid scientific training/productivity as identified through high-impact publications demonstrating creative thinking as well as innovative technical approaches.
