Recreation Coordinator - Special Events and Recreation Programs
This position is responsible for overseeing the following (budget, logistics & supervision):
- City of San Clemente Special Events
- Early Childhood Programs
- Summer Camps
- Elementary School & Middle School Before and After School Programs
Essential Functions
- Coordinate a variety of recreational programs, activities and special events, major city-wide and minor special events, day camps, and recreation activities specific to age groups.
- Coordinate set-up and equipment for a variety of recreational classes, rentals, and programs at City buildings and offsite locations including parks, public streets, and beaches.
- Provide basic facility maintenance and conduct daily inspections of City facilities.
- Supervise general operation of facilities; prepare schedules and arrange for facility set-up.
- Assess community needs in the areas of recreation and leisure services; develop and implement programs aligned with community needs.
- Plan and coordinate marketing efforts; prepare brochures, flyers, bulletin boards and other publicity releases.
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting instructors, vendors and volunteers; supervise and oversee staff members, vendors and volunteers; coordinate or provide training.
- Participate in the preparation of assigned program budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenditures for assigned program.
- Forecast revenues for assigned programs; collect money; balance and reconcile transactions; prepare financial reports.
- Prepare requisitions for purchasing supplies and equipment related to assigned programs.
- Coordinate with other departments, divisions and outside agencies; make presentations to professional groups, and social and community organizations.
- Maintain time sheets for staff; initiate payroll requests.
- Recommend and assist in developing goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
- Solicit sponsorships for events; follow-up with potential supporters as appropriate.
- May assist on a variety of special projects.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

- Techniques of organizing and directing recreation and leisure service programs.
- Principles and practices of recreation and leisure services program development.
- Rules and equipment used in various sports, games and other recreational activities.
- Publicity techniques.
- Basic first aid methods and techniques.
- Current computer software
- Organize, lead and oversee the work of volunteers and part-time staff.
- Integrate City-wide programs with the needs of the community.
- Prepare and present written and oral reports.
- Maintain records and reports.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Coordinate regulations, policies, and procedures governing facility usage.
- Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
- Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

The City of San Clemente provides excellent benefits which include:
FLEXIBLE WORK SCHEDULE – Most positions work a 9/80 work schedule.
HOLIDAYS – The City presently recognizes 12 regular holidays, plus two floating holidays.
VACATION – Employees accumulate vacation at the rate of 104 hours per year increasing to a maximum of 176 hours based on years of service.
SICK LEAVE - Accrual of 8 hours per month.

RETIREMENT – The City of San Clemente is a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), and is subject to the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA). The retirement formula for new employees is based on the category below that the new employee falls under. Employee contribution rates will be determined by the employee's classification and requirements under PEPRA.
Retirement Formula: 2% @ 55
- A new hire who is brought into CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, who has no prior membership in any California Public Retirement System.
- A new hire who is brought into CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, who has a break in service of greater than six months with another California Public Retirement System that is subject to Reciprocity.
- A member who first established CalPERS membership prior to January 1, 2013, who is rehired by a different CalPERS employer after a break in service of greater than six months.
