Job description

The City of Healdsburg is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Recreation Leader III. As a Recreation Leader III, you'll be responsible for managing our Community Garden programs within the Community Services Department. Your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: maintaining communication with Community Gardeners, overseeing garden usage, coordinating plot assignments, purchasing materials, organizing garden-related programs, and facilitating volunteer efforts.
This role offers flexible hours, typically ranging from 15 to 20 hours per week, with variability based on seasonal demands. Weekend and early evening availability may be required throughout the year as needed. The position entails a balanced split of responsibilities, with approximately 50% of your time dedicated to on-site garden support, managing programs, and maintaining equipment; and 50% to administrative tasks, such as email correspondence, supply procurement, and scheduling.

Recreation Leader III earn a salary range of $18.25 - $21.00 per hour. This a non-benefited, part-time position, up to 20 hours/week, no more than 1000 hours per fiscal year.
About the Recreation Leader III Position
Under general direction provides support to recreation programming and facility staff in the operations of assigned recreation facility(ies) and programs The Recreation Leader works under direction from a Recreation Coordinator. Work assignments also may be made by higher-level recreation classifications. Employees in this classification may not perform all of the duties listed below. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist general public in a variety of recreation programs
  • Answer phones and questions from the public regarding recreation programs and facilities
  • Process registration forms; take payments and complete receipts
  • Provide support to recreation program coordination staff
  • Ensure compliance with applicable City and County laws and ordinances, and City policies and procedures
  • Performs related work as assigned.
In addition to the above duties, tasks within an assigned department may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Complete daily logs of recreation center activities; monitor room set-up and routine maintenance of facilities during evening and weekend hours
  • Keep accurate records of attendance at recreation programs or events
  • Assist in the promotion of recreation activities through a wide variety of promotional media
  • Assist in setting up and taking down furniture and equipment
  • Collect and record daily revenues; perform related duties as assigned
  • Assist in coordination of maintenance and custodial activities.
Knowledge of:

  • Standard office practices and procedures

  • Perform basic arithmetic

Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that is likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way of gaining the knowledge and abilities outlined above is:
  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelve grade and sufficient work experience to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge and abilities described above.
  • Supplemental college level coursework in recreation, physical education, public administration or closely related field is highly desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license during the course of employment.
Recreation leaders working with youth groups must be certified free from communicable tuberculosis according to California State Law and provide the City of Healdsburg proof of examination within the past two years. Proof of recertification is required on a four-year cycle. Incumbents must be willing to work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs, including working evenings, weekends and holidays. Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Lift up to 40 pounds.
